Veliki Draški Vrh Slovenia

Veliki Draški Vrh rises to 2,243 metres above sea level and is one of the most impressive peaks above Pokljuka. From the summit, there is an amazing view towards Triglav and the surrounding Bohinj mountains.

I climbed Veliki Draški Vrh from Rudno Polje via Jezerce and Studorski Preval. The route starts quite comfortably through the forest, but becomes more demanding higher up, especially on the unmarked section towards the summit.

Hiking Experience

I started my hike at Rudno Polje, at 1,347 metres above sea level. From the large parking area opposite the military barracks, I crossed the road and followed the forest road towards the Viševnik ski area.

The first part through the forest was comfortable. After passing the ski area, I continued towards Jezerce and Studorski Preval. The trail gradually climbed through the forest before opening up around Jezerce.

At Jezerce, I turned towards Studorski Preval. The trail continued upwards beside the stream and eventually brought me to the pass at 1,892 metres, where beautiful views towards Bohinj opened up.

From Studorski Preval, I turned towards Veliki Draški Vrh. Here I had to be especially careful because the route towards the summit is unmarked. I followed the cairns through the dwarf pine until I reached a short rocky step where I had to use my hands and watch my footing.

After this section, the trail became more open and continued along a beautiful ridge. The final climb was steeper again, but soon I reached the summit after about 3 hours and 20 minutes.

Standing on the top of Veliki Draški Vrh, I was completely impressed by the view. Triglav looked almost within reach.

Views Around Veliki Draški Vrh

The views become better and better as you gain elevation. From Studorski Preval, the landscape towards Bohinj already opens up, but the real reward comes higher on the ridge.

From the summit, Triglav dominates the view. The surrounding Bohinj and Tolmin mountains are also clearly visible, creating an impressive mountain panorama.

I especially enjoyed the views along the final ridge. After spending so much time in the forest and dwarf pine, reaching the open summit felt completely different.

At the summit and along the ridge, I also had to be careful because the slopes towards the Krma Valley drop very steeply.

Hiking Tips

For this hike to Veliki Draški Vrh:

• Pay close attention to the turn after Studorski Preval

• Follow the cairns on the way towards the summit
• Take extra care on the short rocky section
• Be careful around the summit and ridge
• Check the weather before starting
• In winter conditions, an ice axe and crampons are recommended

The unmarked section can be difficult to follow in fog. The rocky step also requires some use of the hands and careful footing.

Weather Conditions

Mountain weather can change quickly around Pokljuka and the higher parts of the Julian Alps.

Fog can be particularly important on this route because the section towards Veliki Draški Vrh is unmarked. Reduced visibility can make it much harder to find the correct trail.

Before starting the hike, I would therefore check the mountain weather forecast and make sure the conditions are suitable for the route.

Best Time to Visit

The conditions on Veliki Draški Vrh depend strongly on the season. The unmarked section and the rocky parts require particular attention when conditions are poor.

In winter, an ice axe and crampons are recommended. Before starting the hike, current weather and trail conditions should always be checked.

Photography

I took many photos during the hike, especially on the higher parts of the route. The views became more impressive as I got closer to the summit, with the open ridge, rocky terrain and surrounding mountains.

From the summit, Triglav is clearly visible and looks incredibly close, almost as if it were right in front of you. It was one of those views that made me stop and simply enjoy the moment.

Final Thoughts

The hike to Veliki Draški Vrh was a great experience for me. I enjoyed the route through Jezerce and over Studorski Preval, but the best part was definitely reaching the open ridge and seeing the mountains around me.

After more than three hours of climbing, reaching the summit felt great. I took some time to enjoy the open views and the mountains around me. Triglav looked incredibly close from here, almost as if it were just in front of me.

The climb was not easy, especially towards the final part, but standing on the summit and taking in the scenery made all the effort feel worthwhile. I stayed there for a while before starting my descent towards Srenjski Preval and Pokljuka.

I also liked the feeling of being high above the surrounding valleys, especially along the ridge towards the summit.

On the way back, I continued over Srenjski Preval towards Pokljuka, finishing a long but very enjoyable mountain day.
