Soriška Planina Mountain Hut

Cycling from Železniki to Soriška Planina is a proper mountain ride and one that really tests your legs. The climb is long, with several steep sections that make you work for every kilometre, but the quiet roads and changing scenery make the ride enjoyable from start to finish.

Soriška Planina is a mountain sports centre located between 1,287 and 1,609 metres above sea level, on Bohinj Saddle between the Gorenjska and Primorska regions. In summer, it is a popular destination for hiking and cycling, while in winter it becomes a small family ski resort. The area is also known for the remains of bunkers from the former Rapallo border, which add an interesting piece of history to the mountain landscape.

What I like about this route is how the scenery changes as you gain elevation. The lower part takes you through countryside and forests, while the landscape gradually becomes more open and alpine as you get closer to Soriška Planina.

One of the best moments comes when you finally get closer to the top and the views begin to open up. After spending so much time climbing through forests and winding mountain roads, the open landscape around Soriška Planina feels like a real change of scenery.

For me, this is what makes the ride memorable. It combines a demanding mountain climb with quiet roads, changing landscapes, and the feeling of finally reaching Soriška Planina after a long ascent.

Starting the Cycling Route from Železniki

I started the ride in Železniki and followed the road towards Soriška Planina. The beginning of the route is relatively calm, with the road passing through countryside and forests before the climb gradually becomes more demanding.

I prefer taking it easy at this stage and finding a comfortable rhythm rather than using too much energy early in the ride. There is still a long way to go, so keeping something in reserve makes the later sections more manageable.

As the road climbs higher, the surroundings become quieter and the mountain scenery starts to take over.

The Climb to the Mountain Hut

The climb towards the mountain hut is long and requires a steady effort. The road winds through forests and along several mountain bends, with the gradient becoming more noticeable as the elevation increases.

What makes the climb interesting is the changing scenery. The forest sections give some shade, while the higher parts gradually become more open and the surrounding mountains start to appear between the trees.

As I got closer to Soriška Planina, I could feel that the end of the climb was getting closer. After such a long ascent, seeing the open landscape around the mountain hut was a great feeling.

Alpine Views Along the Route

The scenery becomes more impressive as the road climbs higher towards Soriška Planina. The lower sections are mostly surrounded by forests, but the landscape gradually opens up into alpine meadows and wider mountain views.

I especially enjoyed the higher sections, where the trees become less dense and there is more space to look across the surrounding hills and peaks. After the long forest sections, these open views make a noticeable difference.

The area around the mountain hut is particularly beautiful. The open alpine landscape gives you a chance to stop, take some photographs, and simply enjoy the surroundings after the climb.

A Rewarding Climb for Cyclists

With approximately 857 metres of elevation gain and an average gradient of around 9%, the ride to Koča na Soriški planini is definitely a serious mountain climb.

For me, the hardest part was simply how long the uphill continued. There are sections where the gradient stays demanding for quite some time, so finding a comfortable rhythm is important. I would rather ride steadily and save some energy for the higher sections than push too hard at the beginning.

The reward comes when the climbing finally ends and the mountain hut is right there. After such a long effort, having a place to sit down, rest, and enjoy the alpine scenery makes reaching the top feel even better.

My Experience

I started the ride in Železniki and knew that I had a long climb ahead of me. The road kept gaining elevation, and there were several sections where the uphill seemed to continue without much of a break.

The higher I got, the more I noticed the change in the landscape. The forest gradually gave way to more open mountain scenery, which made the effort easier to forget for a while.

When I finally reached Koča na Soriški planini, I was happy to be at the top. After the long climb, sitting down at the hut, having a drink, and enjoying the mountain views was exactly what I needed.

For me, that final stop is what makes the ride especially memorable. The climb takes plenty of effort, but the feeling of arriving at the hut and being able to relax makes it all worthwhile.
