Cycling Climb to Soriška Planina in the Slovenian Alps
Cycling from Železniki to Soriška Planina is a proper mountain ride and one that really tests your legs. The climb is long, with steep sections that make you work for every kilometre, but the quiet roads and changing alpine scenery make the effort worthwhile.
Soriška Planina is a mountain sports centre located between 1,287 and 1,609 metres above sea level, on Bohinj Saddle between the Gorenjska and Primorska regions. In summer, it is a popular destination for hiking and cycling, while in winter it becomes a small family ski resort. The area is also known for the remains of bunkers from the former Rapallo border, adding an interesting piece of history to the mountain landscape.
What makes this ride memorable for me is how the road gradually takes you higher into the mountains. The lower sections pass through countryside and forests, while the landscape becomes more open as you get closer to Soriška Planina.
The climb is definitely demanding, but that is also what makes reaching the top so satisfying. After a long uphill ride, arriving at Soriška Planina and knowing that the hardest part is behind you gives you a great feeling of accomplishment.
Starting the Cycling Route from Železniki
The ride starts in Železniki and gradually climbs towards Soriška Planina. The first kilometres pass through quiet countryside, small villages, and green surroundings before the road starts becoming more demanding.
I like this lower section because it gives me time to settle into a steady rhythm before the longer climb begins. The surroundings are peaceful, and the landscape slowly changes as the road takes you higher towards the mountains.
Keeping a comfortable pace from the beginning is important, especially when you know that most of the climbing is still ahead.
The Climb to Soriška Planina
The climb becomes more demanding as the road continues higher towards Soriška Planina. The uphill sections are long and there are several steeper parts where a steady pace makes a big difference.
What I noticed most during the ride was how the climb seemed to continue without giving much of a break. The road winds through forests first, with occasional glimpses of the landscape opening up higher along the route.
The effort is definitely noticeable, but the changing scenery helps take your mind off the climb. As the road gets higher, the mountain atmosphere becomes stronger and the views become more rewarding.
Alpine Scenery Along the Route
One of the best things about this climb is how the landscape changes as you gain elevation. The lower sections are surrounded by forests and countryside, while higher up the road begins to open towards alpine meadows and wider mountain views.
I especially enjoyed the moments when the trees cleared and the surrounding hills and valleys became visible. After spending so much time climbing through the forest, these open sections felt like a real reward.
The combination of quiet mountain roads, green meadows, forests, and distant alpine peaks makes the scenery one of the highlights of the entire ride. On a clear day, there are also plenty of places where it is worth slowing down for a photograph.
A Great Challenge for Mountain Cyclists
With approximately 857 metres of elevation gain and an average gradient of around 9%, this is definitely a demanding climb. The long uphill sections require good pacing, especially when the gradient stays steep for a longer period.
From my experience, the best approach is to keep a steady rhythm rather than trying to climb too quickly at the beginning. The road can feel long, but taking it section by section makes the climb much more manageable.
Reaching Soriška Planina after all that climbing gives you a real sense of accomplishment. The effort feels worthwhile once you can finally stop, catch your breath, and enjoy the mountain surroundings.
My Experience
I started the ride in Železniki and knew from the beginning that this was going to be a proper mountain climb. The road kept gaining elevation, and the longer the ride continued, the more I could feel the effort in my legs.
At several points, my Garmin was showing around a 10% gradient, and the climb seemed like it simply did not want to let up. When I reached Sorica, the road became a little flatter, which was a welcome change and gave me a chance to recover before the climbing continued.
Later, the road became steep again, although that part felt a little easier compared with the first section. It was still a long climb, and by the time I reached the top, I was honestly happy that the uphill was finally over.
Arriving at Soriška Planina felt really rewarding. Having the mountain hut at the top made it even better because I could finally stop, rest, and enjoy the surroundings after the long climb.
Despite how demanding the ride was, I really enjoyed the experience. The combination of the challenge, mountain scenery, and feeling of reaching the top is what makes this route one I would gladly ride again.

Best Time to Cycle
Late spring through early autumn is the best period for cycling to Soriška Planina, when the roads are usually clear and the weather is more suitable for a long mountain climb.
Summer offers longer days and warmer conditions, while autumn brings colourful forests and excellent visibility across the surrounding mountains.
For me, a clear day makes the biggest difference because the views are much better when the surrounding peaks are visible. Since the climb is demanding, I would also avoid the hottest part of the day during summer and start earlier when possible.
Road Conditions
The road to Soriška Planina is fully paved and generally in good condition. The route includes long uphill sections and several winding mountain bends, so the climb requires a steady pace and some concentration.
The descent deserves extra attention, especially after such a long climb. I would keep the speed under control and take the bends carefully rather than rushing down.
It is also worth checking the weather before setting off, as mountain conditions can change quickly and affect the road and visibility.
What to Bring
This is a demanding mountain ride, so I would make sure to have the basic equipment and enough food and water for the climb.
- Plenty of water
- Energy snacks
- Comfortable cycling clothing
- Windproof jacket
- Sunscreen
- Spare inner tube and basic repair kit
I would also take an extra layer for the top, especially when the weather is cooler. After a long climb, the temperature at Soriška Planina can feel noticeably lower than in Železniki.
Photography
The climb to Soriška Planina offers plenty of opportunities for photography, especially as the road reaches the higher sections.
I especially like the moments when the forest opens up and the surrounding hills and mountains become visible. The winding road, green meadows, forests, and alpine landscape all create different scenes during the climb.
The higher sections are my favorite for photographs because the views feel much wider after spending so much of the ride surrounded by trees. A clear day is ideal for capturing the surrounding peaks and valleys.
Why Cycle to Soriška Planina?
For me, the biggest reason to ride to Soriška Planina is the feeling of completing a proper mountain climb. It is not an easy ride, but that makes reaching the top much more satisfying.
I also like the way the scenery changes during the climb. You start among forests and countryside, then gradually reach more open alpine landscapes with wider mountain views.
The mountain hut at the top is another nice reward after the effort. Being able to stop, rest, have something to eat or drink, and enjoy the surroundings makes the long climb feel even more worthwhile.
Final Thoughts
Cycling to Soriška Planina was one of those rides where the climb felt long while I was doing it, but reaching the top made me forget about the tired legs pretty quickly. The mountain hut, fresh air, and open views were a great reward after the effort.
I would probably remember this route most for how the climb kept going and how good it felt to finally reach the top. It was hard work, but at the same time there was always something in the scenery that made me want to keep going.
Looking back on the ride, I especially liked the feeling of getting higher and watching the landscape change around me. It was a demanding day on the bike, but also one that gave me plenty of beautiful scenery and a great memory from the Slovenian Alps.
