Cycling Through Sorica Towards Soriška Planina
Cycling through Sorica is a beautiful way to experience the peaceful landscapes of the Slovenian Alps. This scenic route follows quiet mountain roads through the charming alpine village before continuing towards the challenging climb to Soriška Planina.
Sorica is an idyllic mountain village on the edge of the Škofja Loka Hills, just below Soriška Planina. It is considered one of the most picturesque alpine villages in Slovenia and is also known as the birthplace of the famous Slovenian Impressionist painter Ivan Grohar. The village is especially recognizable for its traditional architecture and distinctive blue slate roofs, which give Sorica a unique alpine character.
The ride combines traditional Slovenian architecture, green meadows, dense forests, and breathtaking mountain scenery. As you continue higher, the views become even more impressive, offering wide panoramas of the surrounding hills and alpine peaks.
For me, Sorica is one of the nicest parts of the route because the peaceful village provides a beautiful contrast to the demanding climb that follows towards Soriška Planina.
Starting the Cycling Route from Železniki
The ride starts in Železniki and gradually climbs towards Sorica. The first part of the route passes through quiet countryside, forests, and rolling hills, giving you a chance to settle into a comfortable rhythm before the harder sections begin.
I enjoy this part of the ride because it feels peaceful and gives me time to take in the changing landscape. The road gradually becomes more mountainous as you get closer to Sorica, and the views become more interesting along the way.
Keeping a steady pace here is helpful, especially if you want to save some energy for the steeper climb towards Soriška Planina.
Cycling Through Sorica
Cycling through Sorica is one of the nicest parts of the route. The village has a peaceful alpine atmosphere, with traditional houses and green surroundings that make it worth slowing down for a moment.
I especially liked riding through the village because it felt very different from the busier roads and towns below. The combination of the old alpine houses, surrounding hills, and quiet roads gives Sorica a really special character.
It is also a good place to take a short break before continuing towards Soriška Planina, where the climb becomes more demanding.
Climbing Towards Soriška Planina
After leaving Sorica, the character of the ride changes quite quickly. The road becomes steeper and the climb towards Soriška Planina requires more effort, especially on the longer uphill sections.
What makes the climb easier to enjoy is the scenery along the way. The higher the road goes, the more open the landscape becomes, and the views of the surrounding mountains are a great reward for the effort.
For me, this is the part of the ride where the challenge really begins. Keeping a steady pace and not rushing makes the climb much more enjoyable, especially when there is still some distance to go.
Scenic Alpine Landscapes
One of the things I enjoy most about this route is how much the landscape changes along the way. The ride starts among forests and countryside around Železniki, passes through the traditional village of Sorica, and gradually reaches more open alpine scenery.
The higher sections offer some of the best views of the ride. Green meadows, mountain pastures, forests, and surrounding peaks create a completely different feeling compared with the lower part of the route.
There are several places where I like to slow down and take a moment to enjoy the views. On a clear day, the open landscape also makes some great opportunities for photography.
My Experience
Cycling through Sorica towards Soriška Planina was one of the rides that stayed with me because of the contrast between the peaceful village and the demanding climb that follows.
The climb seemed like it just did not want to let up. My Garmin kept showing around a 10% gradient for much of the climb, so I definitely felt the effort in my legs. When I reached Sorica, the road finally became a little flatter, which gave me a welcome chance to recover.
But the climbing was not over yet. Further on, the road became steep again, although this part felt a little easier to me than the first section. The climb was still long, though, and by the time I reached the top, I was honestly happy that the uphill was finally over.
What makes reaching Soriška Planina even nicer is that there is a mountain hut at the top, where you can stop, take a break, have something to eat or drink, and enjoy the surroundings after the climb.
Sorica was probably my favorite part of the lower section. The traditional houses, quiet roads, and mountain surroundings created a really nice atmosphere after the demanding climb.
For me, this route is a great combination of a beautiful Slovenian village, a proper cycling challenge, and the mountain landscapes I enjoy most.

Best Time to Visit
Late spring through early autumn is the best period for cycling this route, when the roads are usually clear and the weather is more suitable for a longer mountain ride.
Summer offers pleasant temperatures at higher elevations, while autumn brings beautiful colors to the forests and surrounding hills.
For me, a clear day is the best choice because the mountain views are much more impressive and there are more opportunities to stop for photographs along the way. Since the climb is demanding, I would also avoid the hottest part of the day, especially in summer.
Road Conditions
The road is paved throughout the route and is generally in good condition. The section through Sorica is more relaxed, but after leaving the village the climb becomes steeper and there are several winding sections.
I would take extra care on the descent, especially around the bends. After a long climb it can be tempting to ride faster, but the mountain road still requires attention.
Checking the weather before setting off is also a good idea, as conditions can change quickly at higher elevations.
What to Bring
Because this is a fairly demanding mountain ride, I would make sure to have a few basic things with me:
- Plenty of water
- Energy snacks
- Comfortable cycling clothing
- Windproof jacket
- Sunscreen
- Basic bicycle repair kit
I would also take an extra layer, especially if the weather is cooler. After the long climb to Soriška Planina, it is nice to have something warm to put on when stopping at the mountain hut.
Photography
This route offers plenty of opportunities for photography, especially around Sorica and on the higher sections towards Soriška Planina.
I especially like the contrast between the traditional alpine houses in Sorica and the open mountain scenery higher up. The forests, meadows, winding road, and surrounding peaks all give the ride a different atmosphere as you climb.
The higher sections are my favorite for photographs because the landscape opens up and the views feel much wider. A clear day makes a big difference, especially when the surrounding mountains are visible in the distance.
Why Cycle Through Sorica?
For me, this route is worth doing because it combines several things I enjoy about cycling in Slovenia. You get a beautiful alpine village, quiet mountain roads, a proper uphill challenge, and rewarding scenery all in one ride.
Sorica also gives the route something special. Riding through the village after the long climb from Železniki feels like a nice change of pace before continuing towards the higher mountains.
The climb is definitely demanding, but that is also part of what makes reaching Soriška Planina satisfying. Having the mountain hut at the top is an added bonus and gives you a great place to rest after the effort.
Final Thoughts
The climb from Železniki through Sorica towards Soriška Planina is definitely not an easy ride, but that is what makes reaching the top feel so rewarding. The long sections of climbing test your legs, especially when the gradient stays steep for a long time.
For me, the best part is the combination of the challenge and everything around it. Sorica provides a peaceful break along the way, while the higher sections bring beautiful alpine scenery and a completely different atmosphere.
By the time I reached the top, I was happy to finally finish the climb, but the mountain hut, fresh air, and views made it a great place to stop and recover. This is a ride I would happily do again when I am looking for a proper mountain cycling challenge in Slovenia.
