Gontarska Planina Hike Peaceful Mountain Viewpoint in Slovenia

Gontarska Planina is a peaceful hiking destination in Slovenia that I enjoy visiting for its combination of forest trails, small streams, waterfalls, steep climbs, and beautiful mountain views. It is a quieter place where you can enjoy nature away from the busier hiking routes.

The trail leads through peaceful forests, open slopes, and natural surroundings, creating a relaxing hiking experience. Unlike busy mountain routes, Gontarska Planina offers a calm atmosphere where visitors can enjoy the beauty of Slovenian nature. I also visited Osolnik, another beautiful hiking destination located nearby, making it easy to combine both areas when exploring the surrounding hills. At the summit, hikers are rewarded with beautiful views of the surrounding hills and valleys. It is a perfect place to rest, take photographs, and enjoy the peaceful silence of the mountains.

Starting Point in Trnovec

The hike to Gontarska Planina starts in the village of Trnovec, Slovenia. From the starting area, the marked hiking trail quickly leads into the forest, where the surroundings become quieter and more natural. The first part of the route follows forest paths and gives the hike a pleasant start before the trail becomes steeper.

Hiking Route to Gontarska Planina

I started the hike in Trnovec and followed the same beginning of the trail as the route to Osolnik. Higher up, the trail reaches a fork where you need to follow the direction for Gontarska Planina.

From the fork, the trail starts climbing quite steeply, gaining most of the elevation before reaching the beginning of Gontarska Planina. From there, it takes about another 15 minutes to reach the top.

Once I reached the summit, I was rewarded with beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. It was a great place to take a break, enjoy the scenery, and simply spend some time in nature.

My Experience

I really enjoyed the first part of the hike, up to the trail junction. The route passes through beautiful nature, with many small streams and waterfalls along the way, which made this part of the hike especially enjoyable for me.

As soon as I turned towards Gontarska Planina at the trail junction, I immediately noticed how steep the trail became. The climb is quite demanding and the steepness continues for a while without giving you much of a break. Personally, I enjoy this kind of climb, so I really liked this part of the route.

After reaching the plateau, the character of the hike changes completely. The trail becomes more like a pleasant walk through the landscape, and I could simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings and the beauty of nature.

When I reached the end of the plateau, I was rewarded with the viewpoint and beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. It was a great place to stop, relax, and enjoy the scenery after the climb.

Hike for Nature Lovers

Gontarska Planina is a great choice for hikers who enjoy nature, quiet trails, and beautiful mountain scenery. The route can also be hiked in winter, but proper winter mountaineering equipment and crampons are essential. The steep section can become much more demanding when covered with snow or ice.

Although much of the trail passes through the forest, it is still important to pay attention to your footing, especially on the steep climb. The forest does not mean that the trail is automatically safe in winter conditions.

Once you reach the plateau, the hike becomes much more relaxed and feels more like a pleasant walk through nature. The combination of forest, streams, waterfalls, open landscape, and the final viewpoint makes the route enjoyable in every season.

Viewpoint and Surrounding Landscape

The viewpoint at Gontarska Planina is one of the highlights of the hike. After walking across the plateau, reaching the viewpoint feels like a rewarding finish to the route.

Along the way, you can also see Osolnik from the trail, which is a nice reminder of the nearby hiking destination. From the viewpoint, you can enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding hills, valleys, forests, and the Slovenian landscape.

I especially like this part of the hike because it is a great place to slow down, take some photographs, and simply enjoy being in nature. The peaceful surroundings make the viewpoint a nice place to take a longer break before heading back down.

Recommended Hiking Gear

For the hike to Gontarska Planina, I recommend comfortable hiking shoes with good grip, especially because the trail becomes quite steep after the fork towards the plateau. It is also a good idea to carry enough water and a small daypack for personal items.

In winter, proper mountaineering equipment is essential. Crampons are especially important because the steep forest section can become slippery and icy, even though the trail is mostly protected by the forest.

Autumn brings colorful forests and a different atmosphere to the hike.

The route can also be hiked in winter. Proper winter mountaineering equipment and crampons are necessary during the winter months, especially because of the steep section towards Gontarska Planina. If you are hiking in winter, make sure you have proper mountaineering equipment and crampons. The steep section towards Gontarska Planina can be slippery in snowy or icy conditions, so being properly equipped is important.

Gontarska Planina is a great place for landscape photography. Along the trail, you can photograph the forests, small streams, waterfalls, and open parts of the landscape. Osolnik can also be seen from the trail, adding another interesting detail to the scenery.

Final Thoughts

Gontarska Planina is one of those places I enjoy returning to. The hike has a nice combination of a more demanding climb, peaceful forest trails, small streams and waterfalls, and a relaxing walk across the plateau.

For me, the best part is the change in the character of the route. The steep climb towards the plateau requires some effort, but once the terrain becomes more open, you can slow down and simply enjoy nature. Reaching the viewpoint at the end of the plateau is a rewarding finish, with beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.

If you enjoy quieter hiking destinations and want to experience a less crowded part of Slovenia, I think Gontarska Planina is well worth visiting. It is a place where you can enjoy the trail, fresh air, beautiful scenery, and some peaceful time in nature.
