Gontarska Planina Hike Peaceful Mountain Viewpoint in Slovenia
Gontarska Planina is a peaceful hiking destination in the Polhov Gradec Hills in Slovenia. I enjoy visiting this area because of its quiet forest trails, fresh mountain air, and beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. It is a great place to escape the busier hiking destinations and spend some time in nature.
The hike takes you through quiet forest paths and natural surroundings before reaching the summit. I really enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere along the way and the fresh mountain air. Reaching the top was the highlight for me, with panoramic views of the surrounding forests, rolling hills, the Ljubljana Basin, and distant Slovenian mountains.
For me, Gontarska Planina is a great place to enjoy nature, take photographs, and spend some quiet time outdoors. The combination of the peaceful trail and beautiful mountain views makes the hike a rewarding experience.
Starting Point in Trnovec
I parked my car in a large parking area in Trnovec, where the hike to Gontarska Planina begins. The trail starts with an easy uphill section and leads towards a trail junction.
I really enjoyed this first part of the route because a small stream runs alongside the trail, with several small waterfalls along the way. You can also experience this beautiful part of the trail when hiking towards Osolnik.
After the trail junction, the route towards Gontarska Planina becomes much steeper. The climb gains most of the elevation before reaching the beginning of Gontarska Planina. From there, the trail becomes more like a pleasant walk across the mountain pasture. After walking to the end of the plateau, it takes about another 15 minutes to reach the summit, where you are rewarded with beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
My Experience
I really enjoy the hike to Gontarska Planina and have walked this route many times throughout the year. It is a route I like returning to in different seasons because the experience changes with the weather and the landscape.
The easier beginning of the trail is a great way to warm up before the steeper climb towards Gontarska Planina. By the time I reach the trail junction and turn towards the mountain pasture, I am already warmed up and ready for the steep climb.
I especially enjoy spending time at the top. After reaching the summit, I usually stay there for quite a while, taking in the beautiful views and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. For me, this is one of the best parts of the hike and one of the reasons I keep coming back to Gontarska Planina.
Easy Hike for Nature Lovers
The hike to Gontarska Planina starts with an easier section through the forest, making it a pleasant way to begin the route. The trail then becomes much steeper after the trail junction, so this part requires more effort.
The combination of the forest, small streams, waterfalls, and mountain landscape makes the hike enjoyable even before reaching the summit. Once you reach Gontarska Planina, the trail becomes more relaxed and offers a pleasant walk through the landscape before the final climb to the viewpoint.
Viewpoint and Surrounding Landscape
The summit of Gontarska Planina offers beautiful views across the surrounding forests, rolling hills, and distant Slovenian mountains. From the top, you can also see Sveti Jakob, which stands out as a recognizable landmark in the landscape.
I really enjoy spending time at the viewpoint because the views make the effort of the climb worthwhile. It is a great place to stop, relax, take photographs, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings before heading back down.

Gontarska Planina can be visited throughout the year. Spring and summer offer green forests and pleasant hiking conditions, while autumn brings colorful landscapes and beautiful views. I also enjoy hiking this route in winter, when the surrounding landscape can be covered in snow and the trail has a different atmosphere.
During the winter months, proper mountaineering equipment and crampons are necessary, especially because of the steep section towards Gontarska Planina. Even though the trail passes through the forest, snow and ice can make the steep climb more demanding and slippery.

What to Bring
For my hikes to Gontarska Planina, I always make sure I have enough water and comfortable hiking clothes. Good hiking shoes with a solid grip are important because of the steep section towards the mountain pasture.
I also like carrying a small backpack with water, snacks, and personal items. If I hike here in winter, proper mountaineering equipment and crampons are essential because of the steep and potentially slippery trail.

The viewpoint at the summit is my favorite place for photography. I usually spend quite a while there enjoying the views and taking photographs of the surrounding hills, forests, and distant mountains. Sveti Jakob can also be seen from the top, adding another interesting landmark to the landscape.
