Slap Šum Waterfall  Hidden Gem Near Kranj

Slap Šum, also known as Nemiljski Šum, is a striking waterfall hidden in a narrow forest gorge near Zgornja Besnica. Water drops and slides approximately 22 to 25 metres through the rocky gorge, creating an impressive natural sight despite the very short walk from the parking area.

The waterfall is particularly impressive in spring, when melting snow increases the amount of water flowing through the stream. After heavier rainfall, the water flow can also become much stronger, making Slap Šum look considerably more powerful.

Surrounded by forest, rocks, and flowing water, the waterfall has a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere. The combination of the short access, natural surroundings, and changing water flow makes Slap Šum an interesting hidden attraction near Kranj.

Starting the Walk in Zgornja Besnica

I started the walk at the end of Nova vas near Zgornja Besnica, where the marked parking area provides easy access to the trail towards Slap Šum.

The route enters the forest almost immediately, and I really enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere from the beginning. Trees, fresh air, and the sound of the nearby stream make the short walk feel relaxing and natural.

Even though the walk is very short, I liked the feeling of gradually leaving the road behind and entering the quiet forest. The sound of the water also makes the approach more enjoyable as you get closer to Slap Šum.

Walking Route to Slap Šum

The trail to the waterfall is short and easy, following the stream through a beautiful forest landscape.

Along the way, hikers can enjoy the peaceful surroundings and natural scenery. After rainfall, the waterfall becomes especially impressive, with stronger water flow creating a spectacular view.

Although the route is not demanding, some sections near the waterfall can become wet, muddy, and slippery. Good hiking shoes with proper grip are strongly recommended.

My Experience

I visited Slap Šum from the parking area in Nova vas and was surprised by how quickly you can reach such an impressive natural attraction. The walk at the beginning is easy and comfortable, following the forest path towards the waterfall.

Once you start descending towards the waterfall, however, the trail becomes much wetter and some sections are in poorer condition. A railing provides useful support here and makes the descent towards the waterfall easier and safer. I found this part noticeably more challenging because of the wet and uneven ground.

Closer to the waterfall, the sound of the water becomes much louder. Because Slap Šum is hidden among the surrounding natural landscape, you can hear the waterfall before you fully see it, which makes reaching it even more interesting.

I have to admit that Slap Šum is a really beautiful waterfall. The combination of the forest, green surroundings, flowing water, and peaceful natural setting creates a special atmosphere.

In dry weather, I think the waterfall is easier to access because the path is less wet and slippery. After rain, extra caution and proper hiking shoes are definitely recommended.

Best Time to Visit Slap Šum

Slap Šum can be visited throughout the year, but the amount of water can make a big difference to the experience.

Spring is one of the best times to visit, when melting snow brings more water into the stream and the waterfall becomes much more powerful. After heavier rainfall, the flow can also increase considerably.

During dry periods, the waterfall may have less water, but the trail is usually easier to walk because there is less moisture and fewer slippery sections. Autumn can also be beautiful, with colourful forest surroundings.

In winter, wet sections can freeze and become slippery, so extra caution and suitable footwear are recommended.

Trail Conditions

The first part of the path towards Slap Šum is easy and well maintained. The route through the forest is pleasant and does not require any special hiking experience.

Conditions change when the path begins to descend towards the waterfall. This section can be very wet, uneven, and partly in poorer condition, especially after rain. A railing along this part is helpful and provides extra support during the descent.

For this reason, sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are recommended. Dry weather is preferable if you want an easier and more comfortable approach, while after rainfall the trail requires more care.

What to Bring

For this short walk, you do not need much equipment, but I recommend good hiking footwear, especially for the descent towards the waterfall where the path can be wet, slippery, and uneven.

Bring some water and clothing suitable for the weather. A small backpack is more than enough for this short trip.

A camera or phone is also worth bringing. Slap Šum is surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, and the waterfall is especially impressive when there is more water flowing through the stream

Why Visit Slap Šum?

Slap Šum is a great choice if you want to see an impressive waterfall without a long hike. The walk from Nova vas takes only around 10 to 15 minutes, making it easy to include in a short trip around the Kranj area.

I especially like that the waterfall is surrounded by peaceful nature and hidden away from the main tourist routes. The sound of the water becomes much louder as you approach, adding to the experience before you even see the waterfall.

Slap Šum offers good opportunities for nature photography, especially when the water flow is strong. Spring, when the snow is melting, and periods after heavier rainfall can create a much more powerful waterfall and make the scene particularly interesting to photograph.

The surrounding forest and natural scenery also provide plenty of subjects along the short walk. I would especially recommend taking some photographs from different distances, capturing both the waterfall itself and the peaceful environment around it.

I recommend using some protection for your phone or camera, as the area around the waterfall can be wet and humid from the flowing water. Dry weather can make it easier to move around and find a comfortable position for photography, while wet conditions require more care because the ground near the waterfall can be slippery.

Final Thoughts

Slap Šum is a beautiful natural attraction that is easy to reach but still feels like a hidden place in the forest. The short walk from Nova vas makes it a good choice when you want to see a waterfall without taking on a long hike.

I especially enjoyed the moment when the sound of the waterfall became louder as I approached it. Once you reach the waterfall, its beauty and natural surroundings make the short walk feel worthwhile.
