Starting the Hike to Planjava

The hike starts at Jermanca, where the marked mountain trail leads towards Planjava through the beautiful landscape of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps.

The beginning of the route takes you through mountain terrain surrounded by forests and alpine scenery. As you gain elevation, the trail becomes more demanding, with steeper sections and rocky paths requiring more attention.

The Climb Through Alpine Terrain

The ascent to Planjava is a true mountain experience, with challenging climbs, uneven terrain, and impressive views along the way.

The trail requires good physical preparation and experience with mountain hiking. The changing landscape, from forest sections to open alpine terrain, makes the long climb more rewarding with every step.

Views From Planjava Summit

Reaching the summit of Planjava offers spectacular panoramic views of the Slovenian Alps. From the top, hikers can admire surrounding peaks, deep valleys, and the dramatic mountain landscape of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. It is a perfect place to rest, take photos, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere high above the valleys.

My Experience

The hike to Planjava surprised me more than I expected. The route becomes increasingly demanding as you get higher, with several exposed sections where I had to pay close attention and move carefully.

After reaching Kamniško Sedlo, the character of the hike changes. The trail continues across a scree slope before becoming steeper and more exposed on the way towards Planjava. I strongly recommend proper mountain equipment and a helmet for these sections, especially if you are not used to exposed alpine terrain.

Personally, I prefer less demanding hiking routes, so some parts of the way to Planjava were quite challenging for me. However, reaching the summit made the effort worthwhile. The beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys were a great reward after such a demanding climb.

Trail Conditions

The trail to Planjava changes significantly as you gain elevation. The lower sections are more manageable, but after reaching Kamniško Sedlo, the terrain becomes more demanding.

The route first crosses a scree slope before continuing into steeper and more exposed terrain. The rocky sections require careful movement and good balance, especially in places where the trail becomes narrow or steep.

Because of the exposed terrain, I strongly recommend proper mountain equipment and a helmet. Dry weather is also important, as wet or slippery rocks and scree can make the more difficult sections considerably harder.

Hikers should take their time, watch their footing, and avoid rushing through the exposed parts of the route.

Recommended:

• Carry a helmet for the exposed sections
• Bring at least 3 liters of water and enough food
• Carry suitable mountain clothing

I recommend visiting Planjava in dry weather, as wet or slippery terrain can make the exposed sections considerably more difficult. Mountain conditions can change quickly, so always check the forecast before heading into the mountains..

Best Time to Hike Planjava

The best time for hiking Planjava is generally during the warmer months when mountain trails are more accessible and conditions are usually more suitable.

Because the route includes several steep and exposed sections, I recommend choosing a dry day with stable weather. Wet or slippery terrain can make the more demanding parts of the route considerably more difficult.

Summer offers longer days and good conditions for enjoying the alpine scenery, while early autumn can bring cooler temperatures and clear mountain views. Always check the weather forecast and current mountain conditions before starting the hike.

Final Thoughts

Planjava was a more demanding hike for me than some of the other mountain routes I have experienced. The exposed sections require concentration, careful movement, good preparation, and respect for the mountain terrain.
