Bašeljski Vrh Hike, Slovenia
Bašeljski Vrh is a 1,744-metre-high mountain peak in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, located on the ridge between Storžič and Mali Grintovec. The hike from Mače is a long and demanding ascent, but it offers beautiful mountain scenery and rewarding views along the way.
I really enjoyed this hike because the landscape changed noticeably as I gained altitude. The route begins in the forest and eventually reaches the more open mountain terrain around Dom na Kališču and the ridge towards the summit.
Reaching Bašeljski Vrh was especially rewarding for me. From the top, I could enjoy wide views across Gorenjska, the Ljubljana Basin, and towards the Julian Alps in the background.
Starting the Hike in Mače
I started the hike in the village of Mače, where I parked near the beginning of the marked mountain trail. The route was easy to find, with clear hiking signs guiding me towards Bašeljski Vrh.
The first part of the hike led through the forest. I steadily gained elevation as I followed the trail uphill, with the trees providing shade during the initial part of the climb.
The route from Mače is quite long, so the steady ascent through the forest is only the beginning of the hike. As I continued higher, the surroundings gradually changed and the mountain landscape became more open.
Walking Route to Bašeljski Vrh
The trail continued uphill through the forest, and I gained elevation quite quickly. After a steady climb, I reached Dom na Kališču, where I took a short break and enjoyed the views before continuing towards Bašeljski Vrh.
From the mountain hut, the summit was about 30 minutes away. The trail led across an open ridge among dwarf pine, creating a completely different atmosphere from the forest section below.
As I approached the summit, I paid extra attention because some parts of the trail are exposed. The final section required careful walking, but it also made the approach to Bašeljski Vrh more interesting and rewarding.
Summit and Views
Reaching Bašeljski Vrh at 1,744 metres was one of the highlights of my hike. After the long ascent from Mače and the more exposed section before the summit, stepping onto the top felt particularly rewarding.
The summit opened up beautiful views across Gorenjska and the Ljubljana Basin, with the Julian Alps visible in the background. The open surroundings made it easy to appreciate the scale and beauty of the Slovenian mountain landscape.
I spent some time at the summit enjoying the views and taking photographs before starting my descent. The scenery made the long climb well worth the effort.
My Experience
I found the trail to Bašeljski Vrh very beautiful from the beginning. The route through the forest was peaceful, and I enjoyed the steady climb as the scenery gradually changed with the increasing elevation.
After reaching Dom na Kališču, I took a short break before continuing towards the summit. The final part was especially enjoyable because the trail opened onto the ridge and the surroundings became much more alpine.
Before reaching the summit, however, I was a little surprised by the exposed section of the trail. I had not expected this part, so I slowed down and paid more attention to where I was walking. It was not something that ruined the hike, but it was definitely a section where I felt that extra caution was necessary.
Once I reached Bašeljski Vrh, the effort and careful walking were well worth it. The beautiful views and the feeling of finally reaching the summit made this a very memorable hike for me.

Best Time to Visit Bašeljski Vrh
I would choose late spring, summer, or early autumn for this hike, when the conditions are generally more suitable for a long mountain ascent. I particularly enjoyed being on the open ridge when the weather was good, as this made the higher part of the route much more enjoyable.
Clear weather is especially important for Bašeljski Vrh because the views are one of the main rewards of reaching the summit. I would avoid setting out in poor weather, particularly because of the exposed section before the summit.
Winter brings a completely different experience, with snow and ice potentially covering the trail. In these conditions, the route can become much more demanding and requires appropriate winter mountain equipment.
Trail Conditions
The trail from Mače is well marked and easy to follow, but the long ascent makes it physically demanding. The lower section through the forest is straightforward, while the terrain becomes more open and steeper as you get closer to the summit.
The section before Bašeljski Vrh is more exposed than the earlier part of the route. I was a little surprised by this section during my hike, so I slowed down and paid extra attention to my footing.
In wet weather, the terrain can be more difficult, particularly on steeper or rocky sections. I recommend proper mountain footwear with good grip and checking the weather conditions before starting the hike.
What to Bring
For this hike, I recommend being well prepared because the route from Mače involves a long ascent and significant elevation gain.
Bring:
- Sturdy mountain hiking boots with good grip
- Enough drinking water
- Snacks or food for the longer hike
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- A small hiking backpack
- Trekking poles, especially if you find them useful on steep terrain
- A phone or camera for photographs
I found that having suitable footwear and enough water was particularly important during the long climb. It is also a good idea to carry an extra layer of clothing, as conditions can feel different once you reach the higher and more open parts of the route.
During winter, I recommend carrying crampons because snow and ice can make the trail slippery and more demanding.

I would recommend Bašeljski Vrh to hikers who enjoy longer mountain hikes and beautiful alpine scenery. The route from Mače requires quite a lot of effort, but I found the trail very enjoyable because the landscape changes throughout the ascent.

For me, Bašeljski Vrh is a great choice when you want a challenging mountain day with beautiful scenery and a rewarding summit. The views from the top make the long climb worthwhile.
Photography
I had plenty of opportunities for photography during the hike to Bašeljski Vrh. The forest section offered a peaceful atmosphere, while the higher parts of the route became much more open and provided better views of the surrounding mountains.
I particularly enjoyed taking photographs on the ridge near the summit, where the dwarf pine and open mountain landscape created a beautiful setting. The changing scenery made the photographs from the hike quite varied.
The summit was the best place for wider landscape photographs. From Bašeljski Vrh, I could capture views across Gorenjska and the Ljubljana Basin, with the Julian Alps visible in the background.
Final Thoughts
Bašeljski Vrh was a beautiful and rewarding hike for me, and the trail itself was one of the things I enjoyed most. The route from Mače gradually changes from a peaceful forest path into more open mountain terrain, which made the long ascent interesting all the way to the summit.
I particularly enjoyed the section around Dom na Kališču and the final walk along the open ridge. The exposed part before the summit caught me a little by surprise, as I had not expected the trail to become like that. I slowed down and took extra care, but it also gave the final part of the hike a more adventurous feeling.
Bašeljski Vrh was a great experience for me. I really liked the trail and the way the scenery changed as I climbed higher. The exposed section before the summit was something I did not expect, but reaching the top afterwards made the whole hike feel even more rewarding.
