Korošaški Slapovi Hike, Slovenia

Korošaški slapovi are a hidden natural attraction between Kamniški Vrh and Krvavec in Slovenia. The waterfalls are formed along the Korošak stream, which flows through the forest and descends over several rocky levels.

The appearance of Korošaški slapovi depends greatly on the amount of water in the stream. After heavier rainfall, the Korošak becomes much stronger and the rapids can turn into impressive waterfalls, while during dry periods some sections may have very little water or even dry up completely.

I visited the waterfalls from Klemenčevo and found the route more adventurous than its short distance might suggest. The unmarked trail follows the stream through the forest and gorge, with rocks, roots, and several places where the water has to be crossed on foot.

Starting the Hike in Klemenčevo

I parked at the end of Klemenčevo, where the route begins near the forest. Just after the barrier, I crossed the Bistričica stream and turned left onto a narrow, unmarked path heading into the gorge along the Korošak stream.

From this point, there are no trail markings to follow, so I kept to the worn path and used the sound of the water as a guide. The route stays close to the stream, and several crossings require careful steps across rocks.

The forest section feels natural and slightly wild, with rocks, tree roots, and the Korošak stream accompanying the hike. After around 40 minutes, I reached the main Korošaški waterfall, which rises approximately 15 metres above the rocky gorge.

Walking Route to Korošaški Slapovi

The route to Korošaški slapovi is short, but the unmarked trail gives it a more adventurous character. The path follows the Korošak stream through forest and rocky terrain, with sections where rocks and tree roots make the walking less straightforward.

Several times, I had to cross the stream by stepping carefully from rock to rock. The difficulty can change depending on the weather and water level, so the route requires more attention after rainfall.

The closer I got to the waterfall, the more noticeable the sound of the flowing Korošak became. This made the approach particularly enjoyable and added to the feeling of exploring a secluded part of the forest.

From the main waterfall, the hike can also be extended. I continued steeply uphill towards Planina Osredek, where the character of the route changes from a narrow forest gorge to more open mountain terrain.

Korošaški Waterfalls

The main Korošaški waterfall is the most impressive point of the route. At around 15 metres high, it drops over the rocks in the forest gorge and creates a beautiful natural scene surrounded by trees, rocks, and flowing water.

The Korošak stream changes considerably depending on the weather. After heavier rainfall, the water becomes much stronger and several rapids along the stream can turn into powerful waterfalls. During dry periods, however, the flow can become very low and some of the waterfalls may completely disappear.

When I reached the main waterfall, I stopped for a while to enjoy the surroundings and take photographs. The combination of the rocky gorge, flowing water, and forest made the location feel particularly wild and secluded.

My Experience

This hike gave me a different experience from a typical marked mountain trail. Following an unmarked path beside the Korošak stream and crossing the water over rocks made the short route feel more adventurous.

I particularly enjoyed the section around the main waterfall, where the narrow gorge, rocks, roots, and flowing water created a completely natural atmosphere. It was a place where I could slow down, take photographs, and simply enjoy being away from busier hiking destinations.

I also continued my hike from the waterfall towards Planina Osredek and later Kamniški Vrh. The steep ascent and more open terrain made the trip considerably longer and gave me the opportunity to combine the waterfalls with a mountain hike.

For this route, I recommend appropriate hiking and mountain equipment. Some sections can be steep, rocky, or slippery, and in winter crampons are recommended when snow and ice are present.

Best Time to Visit Korošaški Slapovi

Korošaški slapovi can be visited throughout the year, but the amount of water in the Korošak stream makes a significant difference to the experience.

The best time to see the waterfalls with stronger water flow is shortly after heavier rainfall. At this time, the stream becomes much more powerful and the smaller rapids can turn into impressive waterfalls. During longer dry periods, the water level can drop considerably and some waterfalls may even disappear completely.

Spring and autumn can be particularly rewarding because of the changing forest scenery and, often, higher water levels. Summer offers a pleasant shaded walk through the forest, although dry weather can reduce the flow.

Winter is quieter and can create beautiful icy scenery, but snow and ice can make the unmarked trail considerably more difficult. Appropriate mountain equipment and crampons are recommended when conditions are icy.

Trail Conditions

The trail to Korošaški slapovi is unmarked and follows the Korošak stream through forest and rocky terrain. When I walked this route, I followed the worn path along the stream and had to pay attention to where I was stepping, especially around the rocks and tree roots.

Several sections required me to cross the Korošak stream by carefully stepping across the rocks. After rain, these rocks can become slippery, while the stronger water flow can also make the crossings more challenging.

The route became more rugged as I approached the main waterfall, with a combination of rocks, roots, and uneven ground. From the waterfall, I continued steeply uphill towards Planina Osredek, where wooden steps helped me through a few more exposed sections.

Because of the natural and unmarked character of the trail, I recommend appropriate hiking or mountain equipment. In winter, when snow and ice are present, crampons are recommended.

What to Bring

Based on my experience on the trail, I recommend bringing:

  • Comfortable hiking shoes with good grip
  • Appropriate hiking or mountain equipment
  • Enough drinking water
  • Weather-appropriate clothing
  • A small backpack
  • A camera or phone for photographs

Good footwear is particularly important because the route includes rocks, tree roots, uneven ground, and several stream crossings. When I walked the trail, I found that careful footing was important in the sections close to the Korošak stream.

If you plan to continue from the main waterfall towards Planina Osredek and Kamniški Vrh, I recommend more suitable mountain equipment because the route becomes steeper and more demanding.

During winter, snow and ice can make the trail slippery, so crampons are recommended when conditions require them.

Why Visit Korošaški Slapovi?

I would recommend Korošaški slapovi to hikers who enjoy discovering quieter and less-developed places in Slovenia. The hike is relatively short, but the unmarked trail, stream crossings, rocky terrain, and narrow gorge make it feel more adventurous than a typical easy walk.

What I enjoyed most was the feeling of following the Korošak stream into a secluded part of the forest and gradually approaching the main waterfall. There were no busy tourist paths or large crowds, which made it easy to slow down and enjoy the surroundings.

For anyone wanting a longer outing, the route can also be continued from the waterfall towards Planina Osredek and Kamniški Vrh. I found this a great way to turn a short visit to the waterfalls into a more complete mountain adventure.

Photography

I enjoyed taking photographs throughout this hike, not only at the main waterfall. The narrow gorge, rocks, roots, and Korošak stream created interesting details along the route, especially where the water flowed between the rocks.

The main waterfall was naturally the main photography spot for me. Its surroundings are quite enclosed by the forest, so getting a good view required moving carefully around the rocks and choosing a suitable position.

After continuing towards Planina Osredek and Kamniški Vrh, the scenery changed completely. The more open grassy ridge and mountain views provided a different setting for photographs and were a nice contrast to the dark, narrow gorge below.

For me, this combination of a hidden waterfall, forest details, and open mountain scenery made the hike particularly rewarding from a photography perspective.

Final Thoughts

Korošaški slapovi gave me a much more adventurous experience than I expected from such a short hike. The unmarked trail, stream crossings, rocks, and narrow gorge made the approach to the waterfall feel like a real exploration rather than a simple walk.

The main waterfall was the highlight, but continuing towards Planina Osredek and Kamniški Vrh made the outing even more worthwhile. The change from the enclosed forest gorge to the open mountain landscape created two very different experiences in one hike.

The hike to Korošaški slapovi is a great choice for anyone who enjoys exploring quieter corners of Slovenia. From my experience, the waterfalls are especially worth seeing after heavier rainfall, when the Korošak carries more water and the whole area becomes much more impressive.
