Mount Stol Hike
Mount Stol is the highest peak of the Karawanks and one of Slovenia’s most impressive mountain destinations. The hike offers a beautiful combination of forests, alpine meadows, open mountain terrain, and spectacular views that become wider and more impressive as the trail climbs higher.
The route to the summit is long and physically demanding, making it a great choice for experienced hikers who enjoy challenging mountain climbs. Along the way, the peaceful surroundings and changing landscapes make the effort worthwhile, with beautiful views across the surrounding valleys and mountains.
Reaching the summit of Mount Stol is a rewarding experience after the demanding ascent. From the top, the wide panoramic views across Slovenia, the Julian Alps, and Austria create a memorable mountain experience. The combination of challenging hiking, peaceful alpine surroundings, and incredible scenery makes Mount Stol a hike worth experiencing.
Starting the Hike at Valvasorjev Dom pod Stolom
The hike begins at Valvasorjev Dom pod Stolom, where parking is available near the mountain hut.
From the starting point, the trail gradually climbs through forest paths before reaching more open alpine terrain. The peaceful surroundings and fresh mountain air create a great atmosphere from the beginning of the hike.
Starting the hike from Valvasorjev Dom pod Stolom also shortens the overall route by about one hour compared with starting from the lower parking area, making it a convenient starting point for the ascent.
Walking Route to Mount Stol
The trail follows a steady uphill route through forests, mountain pastures, and exposed ridge sections. The ascent is demanding, but the changing scenery makes the effort worthwhile.
As you climb higher, the views become wider and more impressive. On clear days, hikers can see across the Julian Alps, surrounding valleys, and even into Austria.
One of the most beautiful viewpoints along the route is the view towards Lake Bled far below, surrounded by mountains and appearing as a small turquoise spot in the landscape.
Summit and Views
Reaching the summit of Stol (2,236 m) is a true mountain achievement. The top offers incredible 360-degree panoramic views across Slovenia and Austria.
From the summit, hikers can enjoy views of the Karawanks, Julian Alps, valleys below, and distant mountain landscapes. The wide-open scenery and fresh alpine air make the climb extremely rewarding.
My Experience
Mount Stol is a challenging hike that requires good endurance, but every step of the journey is rewarded with breathtaking scenery and a true feeling of being in the mountains.
This is a hike I will always remember. Every time I reach the summit of Mount Stol, I remember the steep climb and the effort needed to get there. The trail is quite steep in some sections, but the views and the feeling of reaching the top make it absolutely worth it.
The long ascent, peaceful alpine atmosphere, and unforgettable views from the summit make this one of my favorite hikes in the Karawanks. The trail offers a great combination of effort, nature, and beautiful landscapes, with amazing views opening up along the way.
I also recommend visiting Prešeren Hut below Mount Stol. The hut staff are friendly, and it is a great place to take a rest and enjoy the mountain atmosphere. For a beautiful hiking experience, you can continue on the easier trail and complete a circular route, enjoying even more scenic views along the way.
Starting early in the morning, keeping a steady pace, and taking time to enjoy the surroundings make the whole experience much more enjoyable. Reaching the summit after the long climb feels especially rewarding, with panoramic views that make you appreciate the beauty of the Slovenian mountains even more.

Best Time to Visit Mount Stol
The best time to hike Mount Stol is from late spring until autumn when the weather conditions are usually more suitable for mountain hiking.
Summer offers long days and excellent visibility, but the exposed sections can become hot because of limited shade. Autumn is especially beautiful with colourful landscapes and clear mountain views.
Winter conditions can be much more challenging, requiring proper winter equipment and mountain experience.
Trail Conditions
The trail is well marked but physically demanding due to the long climb and constant elevation gain. Lower sections pass through forest, while higher sections become more exposed.
The route is not technically extremely difficult, but hikers should be prepared for changing weather, longer walking time, and exposed terrain.
What to Bring
Bring plenty of water, especially during warm weather, because many sections are exposed to the sun. I recommend carrying at least 3 liters of water, even though Prešeren Hut is located below the summit.
Recommended equipment includes sturdy hiking shoes, sun protection, weather-appropriate clothing, snacks, and trekking poles for extra stability during the ascent and descent.
