The hike from Valvasorjev Dom pod Stolom is long and demanding, with a significant elevation gain along the way. The route passes through forests, alpine meadows, and open mountain terrain before reaching the summit.
For hikers who enjoy challenging climbs, beautiful mountain scenery, and rewarding summit views, Mount Stol offers an unforgettable experience in the Slovenian mountains.
Starting the Hike at Valvasorjev Dom pod Stolom
Starting from Valvasorjev Dom pod Stolom, the route immediately leads uphill through the forest. Parking is available near the mountain hut, making this a convenient starting point for the ascent.
The first part of the hike is peaceful and shaded, with a steady climb through the forest. The route gradually gains elevation, while the quiet surroundings make the beginning of the long ascent enjoyable.
For me, this is a nice way to start the hike to Mount Stol, with the forest providing a calm introduction before the route continues into more open mountain terrain.
Walking Route to Mount Stol
The route continues uphill from Valvasorjev Dom through the forest, with a steady climb that gradually becomes more demanding. The long ascent requires good endurance, but the peaceful surroundings make the effort easier to handle.
Higher up, the forest becomes thinner and the landscape starts to open. The views of the surrounding mountains and valleys become more impressive as the trail gains elevation.
The trail continues towards the upper slopes of Mount Stol, where the terrain becomes more open and the feeling of being high in the mountains becomes stronger.
Summit and Views
Reaching the summit of Mount Stol at 2,236 metres is a rewarding moment after the long ascent. From the top, the views open in every direction across the Karawanks, Julian Alps, Austria, and the surrounding valleys.
One of the things I really like about the summit is how clearly you can see the surrounding mountains and nearby peaks. On a clear day, you can look across the Karawanks and see many of the surrounding hills and mountain ridges, with the valleys far below. The wide-open landscape gives you a great feeling of how high you have climbed.
The summit is also a great place to take some time after the long ascent. Sitting down, enjoying the views, and looking at the surrounding mountains makes the effort of reaching the top feel worthwhile.
My Experience
Mount Stol is a hike I will always remember. The long ascent requires good endurance, and there are some quite steep sections, but the effort feels worthwhile as the views become more impressive with every part of the climb.
What I especially like about this hike is the feeling of gradually entering a true mountain environment. The route starts in the forest and continues higher into more open terrain, with the surrounding mountains becoming increasingly visible.
Reaching the summit is the highlight of the hike. The views of the surrounding peaks, Karawanks, Julian Alps, Austria, and the valleys below make the long climb worthwhile. It is a great feeling to finally stand on the highest peak of the Karawanks and look around at the mountains you have climbed through.
I also recommend stopping at Prešeren Hut, which is only around 15 minutes from the summit. The friendly staff and peaceful mountain atmosphere make it a good place to rest before continuing or starting the descent.
For an even more enjoyable experience, starting early and keeping a steady pace is a good idea. Mount Stol is a demanding hike, but the combination of the climb, mountain scenery, and incredible views makes it one of my favourite hikes in the Karawanks.

Best Time to Visit Mount Stol
The best time to hike Mount Stol is from late spring to autumn, when the higher sections are generally more accessible and mountain conditions are more favourable.
Summer offers long days and plenty of time for the long ascent, although some sections can become hot because of the limited shade. Starting early in the morning is therefore a good idea.
Autumn can be particularly beautiful, with colourful forests and clear views of the surrounding mountains. I recommend suitable mountaineering equipment for the hike, and in winter, crampons are also recommended because some sections are steep and slippery conditions can increase the risk of slipping. Winter ascents should only be attempted with appropriate experience and preparation.
The trail to Mount Stol is well marked, but the long ascent and significant elevation gain make it physically demanding. Some sections are quite steep, so good endurance is important, especially during the upper part of the climb.
The conditions can also change as you gain elevation. Lower sections are mainly forested, while higher parts become more open and exposed to sun, wind, and changing mountain weather.
Because of the steep sections, I recommend proper mountaineering equipment and sturdy hiking footwear. In winter, snow and ice can make the trail slippery, so crampons may be necessary to reduce the risk of slipping. Always check the mountain conditions before starting the hike.
What to Bring
For the long ascent to Mount Stol, it is important to come prepared. Bring enough water and food, especially because the hike takes several hours and some sections offer limited shade.
Good hiking footwear with proper grip is recommended for the steep sections. Weather-appropriate clothing, sun protection, and trekking poles can also be useful during the long climb.
I recommend proper mountaineering equipment, especially for the higher and more exposed sections. During winter, crampons are also recommended because the steep trail can become icy and slippery, increasing the risk of slipping.

Photography
Mount Stol offers excellent opportunities for mountain photography throughout the hike. The scenery changes as you climb, from forest paths in the lower sections to open mountain slopes and wide alpine landscapes higher up.
The summit is the main highlight for photography, with views of the surrounding Karawanks, Julian Alps, Austria, and the valleys below. On a clear day, the surrounding peaks can be seen particularly well from the top.
The open mountain terrain also gives you many opportunities to photograph the landscape from different points along the route. I especially enjoy capturing the surrounding mountains and the changing scenery as the trail gets higher.
