Korošaški Slapovi Hike

Korošaški slapovi are a hidden natural attraction near Kamniški Vrh, located between Kamniški Vrh and Krvavec. The waterfalls are found along the Korošak stream, which flows down through several levels of rocks and creates a series of waterfalls and rapids in the forest.

The number and size of the waterfalls depend on the amount of water in the stream. After heavier rainfall, the Korošak stream becomes much stronger, and many of the rapids turn into impressive waterfalls. During dry periods, some of the waterfalls can become much smaller or even completely dry, so visiting after rainfall is especially worthwhile.

I visited Korošaški slapovi from Klemenčevo and enjoyed the peaceful forest surroundings along the way. The short hike offered a pleasant escape into nature, with the sound of the Korošak stream becoming an important part of the experience as I approached the waterfalls.

Starting the Hike in Klemenčevo

I parked at the end of the village of Klemenčevo. Just beyond the barrier, I crossed the Bistričica stream and turned left onto an unmarked path leading into the gorge alongside the Korošak stream.

The trail follows the stream for most of the way. Since it is not marked, I simply followed the worn path and the sound of the flowing water. Along the route, I had to cross the stream several times by carefully stepping across the rocks.

After just under 40 minutes of somewhat wild walking among rocks and tree roots, I reached the bottom of the beautiful main waterfall, which is around 15 metres high. I returned to Klemenčevo along the same route.

On some occasions, however, I continued my hike from the main waterfall and climbed steeply uphill. Wooden steps helped me through a few exposed sections, and the path eventually led me to Planina Osredek.

From there, I turned right and followed a scenic grassy ridge. In just under an hour, I reached the summit of Kamniški Vrh, where the character of the hike changed from the narrow forest gorge to more open mountain terrain and views.

Walking Route to Korošaški Slapovi

The route to Korošaški slapovi is short but feels more adventurous than a typical easy forest walk. The unmarked path follows the Korošak stream through a narrow, rocky section of the gorge, with tree roots, rocks, and several stream crossings along the way.

The terrain is natural and not heavily developed, so the route requires some care, especially after rain when the rocks and ground can become wet and slippery. The sound of the Korošak stream accompanies the walk for much of the route and makes the approach to the waterfall particularly enjoyable.

Although the hike to the main waterfall takes less than an hour, the character of the trail makes it feel like a small adventure rather than a simple walk in the forest.

Korošaški Waterfalls

The main Korošaški waterfall is the highlight of the hike. At around 15 metres high, it drops over the rocks in the narrow forest gorge and creates a beautiful natural scene surrounded by trees, moss, and the rocky stream bed.

What makes Korošaški slapovi especially interesting is that their appearance changes depending on the amount of water in the Korošak stream. After heavier rainfall, the stream becomes much stronger and several smaller rapids can turn into impressive waterfalls. During dry periods, however, the water flow can decrease considerably, and some of the waterfalls may even dry up completely.

When I reached the main waterfall, the combination of the steep rocks, flowing water, and forest surroundings made it one of the most memorable parts of the hike. The secluded location also gave me time to stop, take some photographs, and enjoy the natural surroundings without the crowds found at more popular waterfalls.

My Experience

For me, the hike to Korošaški slapovi was more than just a short walk to a waterfall. The unmarked trail, stream crossings, rocks, and roots gave the route a more natural and adventurous character than I expected.

I especially enjoyed following the Korošak stream through the gorge and gradually getting closer to the main waterfall. The surroundings felt secluded and peaceful, which made the hike very different from more popular and frequently visited mountain trails.

On some occasions, I continued the hike from the waterfall towards Planina Osredek and Kamniški Vrh. The steep climb, wooden steps, and grassy ridge added another dimension to the trip and turned a short waterfall hike into a longer mountain adventure.

I recommend wearing appropriate hiking and mountain equipment for this route, especially because some sections are rocky, steep, or slippery. During winter, when ice and snow can make the trail more difficult, crampons are recommended for safer progress.

Best Time to Visit Korošaški Slapovi

Korošaški slapovi can be visited throughout the year, but the amount of water in the Korošak stream has a major influence on the experience.

The best time to see the waterfalls at their most impressive is after a period of heavier rainfall, when the stream becomes stronger and the smaller rapids can turn into more powerful waterfalls. During prolonged dry periods, the water flow can become very low, and some of the waterfalls may even dry up completely.

Spring and autumn can offer particularly attractive conditions, with fresh or colourful forest surroundings and generally higher water levels. Summer provides a pleasant shaded walk through the forest, although the waterfalls may have less water during dry periods.

Winter can create a beautiful and quiet mountain atmosphere, but icy and snowy conditions can make the unmarked trail more difficult. Appropriate mountain equipment, including crampons when needed, is recommended in winter.

Trail Conditions

The trail to Korošaški slapovi is not marked, so some route-finding is required. The path follows the Korošak stream through the forest and gorge, with sections containing rocks, tree roots, and uneven ground.

Several stream crossings are required, and the rocks can become slippery when wet. After heavy rainfall, the increased water flow can also make some crossings more difficult.

The section from the main waterfall towards Planina Osredek is considerably steeper, with a few exposed places where wooden steps help with the ascent. If continuing towards Kamniški Vrh, the route becomes more demanding and requires appropriate mountain footwear and equipment.

During winter, snow and ice can make the trail significantly more challenging. Crampons are recommended when icy conditions are present.

What to Bring

For the hike to Korošaški slapovi, I recommend bringing:

  • Comfortable hiking shoes with good grip
  • Appropriate hiking or mountain equipment
  • Enough drinking water
  • Weather-appropriate clothing
  • A small backpack for personal belongings
  • A camera or phone for photography

Because the trail is unmarked and includes rocks, roots, and stream crossings, good footwear is particularly important. After rain, waterproof or water-resistant footwear can be useful.

If continuing from the main waterfall towards Planina Osredek and Kamniški Vrh, more suitable mountain equipment is recommended because the route becomes steeper and more demanding.

During winter, snow and ice can make the trail slippery, so crampons are recommended when conditions require them

Why Visit Korošaški Slapovi?

Korošaški slapovi are a great choice for hikers who enjoy discovering quieter and less-developed natural places in Slovenia. The short approach from Klemenčevo makes the waterfalls accessible without a long hike, while the unmarked trail and stream crossings give the route a more adventurous character.

I particularly recommend this hike to anyone who enjoys exploring places that feel more wild and natural rather than heavily developed tourist attractions. The combination of the Korošak stream, rocky gorge, forest, and main waterfall creates a memorable experience.

For those looking for a longer adventure, the hike can also be extended from the waterfall towards Planina Osredek and Kamniški Vrh, turning the short waterfall visit into a more demanding mountain hike.

Photography

Korošaški slapovi offer several good photography opportunities, especially around the main waterfall and along the Korošak stream. The combination of flowing water, rocks, moss, tree roots, and the surrounding forest creates a natural setting for photographs.

The amount of water can also change the appearance of the waterfalls considerably. After heavier rainfall, the stronger flow makes the main waterfall and smaller cascades particularly interesting to photograph.

I stopped at the waterfall to take photographs and enjoyed capturing the contrast between the flowing water and the surrounding forest. A waterproof camera cover or careful handling of your camera can be useful because the spray can be stronger when the water level is high

Final Thoughts

Korošaški slapovi were one of those hikes where the journey was just as interesting as the destination. Following the unmarked path beside the Korošak stream, crossing the water over rocks, and walking through the narrow forest gorge gave the hike a more adventurous feeling than its short distance might suggest.

The main waterfall was the highlight of my visit, but I also enjoyed the possibility of continuing towards Planina Osredek and Kamniški Vrh. This made it possible to turn a short waterfall hike into a longer mountain adventure.

If you enjoy quieter places, flowing water, and less-developed trails, I think Korošaški slapovi are well worth visiting. I would especially recommend going after heavier rainfall, when the Korošak stream is stronger and the waterfalls are at their most impressive.
