Korošaški Slapovi Hike, Slovenia

Korošaški slapovi are hidden between Kamniški Vrh and Krvavec in the forested landscape of Slovenia. The waterfalls are formed along the Korošak stream, which descends through several rocky levels and creates a series of cascades and waterfalls.

The character of Korošaški slapovi changes with the amount of water in the stream. After heavier rainfall, the Korošak becomes much stronger and the rapids can turn into impressive waterfalls. During dry periods, the water flow can become very low and some of the waterfalls may even disappear.

I visited Korošaški slapovi from Klemenčevo and followed the stream through a natural, unmarked route. The short walk to the main waterfall, combined with the rocks, roots, stream crossings, and secluded forest surroundings, made the hike feel more adventurous than I initially expected.

Starting the Hike in Klemenčevo

I parked at the end of Klemenčevo and started the hike near the barrier at the edge of the village. Just beyond it, I crossed the Bistričica stream and turned left onto an unmarked path leading into the gorge beside the Korošak stream.

There are no standard trail markings along this section, so I followed the worn path and stayed close to the stream. The route quickly became more natural and rugged, with rocks, tree roots, and several places where I had to cross the water by carefully stepping over the rocks.

The sound of the Korošak accompanied me throughout this part of the hike. After around 40 minutes, I reached the main waterfall, which is approximately 15 metres high and lies directly within the forested gorge.

Walking Route to Korošaški Slapovi

The route stays close to the Korošak stream for most of the way. I followed the worn path through the gorge, with the stream often just a few steps away. The terrain included rocks, exposed roots, and uneven sections that required careful footing.

I had to cross the Korošak several times by stepping from rock to rock. These crossings were manageable when the water level was lower, but the conditions can change after heavy rainfall when the stream becomes stronger.

The walk was not long, but the natural terrain made it feel more adventurous than a typical forest hike. The constant sound of the water also made the approach to the main waterfall particularly enjoyable.

Korošaški Waterfalls

The main Korošaški waterfall is approximately 15 metres high and is tucked into the forest along the Korošak stream. The water drops over the rocky section of the gorge, creating an impressive sight when the stream is flowing strongly.

What makes these waterfalls particularly interesting is how much they depend on the weather. After heavier rainfall, the Korošak carries considerably more water and several of the smaller rapids can become powerful waterfalls. In dry periods, the flow can be much weaker and some sections may even dry out.

When I reached the main waterfall, I stopped to enjoy the surroundings and take photographs. The combination of the water, rocks, roots, and dense forest gave the place a wild and secluded feeling that I really enjoyed.

My Experience

This hike was a nice reminder that a short route can still feel like a real adventure. From the beginning in Klemenčevo, I enjoyed following the Korošak stream through the forest and gradually leaving the more familiar paths behind.

The unmarked trail and several stream crossings made me pay more attention to where I was walking, but that was also part of what made the experience enjoyable. Instead of simply following marked signs, I had to follow the worn trail and the sound of the water.

Reaching the main waterfall was the highlight of the hike. I spent some time there taking photographs and enjoying the quiet surroundings before heading back. The natural and secluded character of the place was what I liked most about the visit.

I recommend appropriate hiking and mountain equipment for this route. Some sections can be rocky, slippery, or uneven, and crampons are recommended in winter when snow and ice are present.

Best Time to Visit Korošaški Slapovi

When I visited Korošaški slapovi, I could see why the amount of water makes such a difference to the experience. The Korošak stream is an important part of the hike, and after heavier rainfall the waterfalls can be much more impressive.

I would personally choose a period shortly after good rainfall if I wanted to see the waterfalls with a stronger flow. During dry weather, the stream can become much smaller and some of the waterfalls may even dry up completely.

I also enjoyed the forest surroundings during my visit, which make the route pleasant even when the water level is lower. Winter brings a completely different atmosphere, with the possibility of snow and ice along the trail.

Trail Conditions

When I walked the trail to Korošaški slapovi, I found the terrain more natural and rugged than a typical marked forest path. The route is unmarked, so I followed the worn sections close to the Korošak stream and paid attention to the terrain.

I had to cross the stream several times by stepping across the rocks. The combination of wet stones, tree roots, and uneven ground meant that I had to watch my footing, especially in the sections closest to the water.

After rainfall, these conditions can become more demanding because the rocks can be slippery and the Korošak carries more water. I recommend appropriate hiking or mountain equipment for the route. In winter, crampons are recommended when snow and ice make the trail slippery.

What to Bring

Based on my experience on the trail, I recommend bringing:

  • Comfortable hiking shoes with good grip
  • Appropriate hiking or mountain equipment
  • Enough drinking water
  • Weather-appropriate clothing
  • A small backpack
  • A camera or phone for photographs

Good footwear is particularly important because the route includes rocks, tree roots, uneven ground, and several stream crossings. I found that careful footing was especially important in the sections close to the Korošak stream.

If you plan to continue from the main waterfall towards Planina Osredek and Kamniški Vrh, more suitable mountain equipment is recommended because the route becomes steeper and more demanding.

Why Visit Korošaški Slapovi?

What I liked most about Korošaški slapovi was the feeling of discovering a quieter part of Slovenian nature. The route is short, but following the Korošak stream through the forest and crossing the water over rocks gives the hike a more adventurous character.

I enjoyed that the area does not feel heavily developed or crowded. The sound of the stream, the rocky gorge, and the forest made the whole walk feel much more natural than a typical tourist attraction.

For me, the possibility of continuing towards Planina Osredek and Kamniški Vrh is another reason to visit. It means the waterfall can be part of a longer mountain outing rather than being the only destination of the day.

Photography

I found the Korošak stream itself just as interesting to photograph as the main waterfall. Along the route, the water flowing between rocks, tree roots, and moss created many small natural scenes that were easy to miss while simply walking.

At the main waterfall, I stopped for several photographs and tried to capture the water together with the surrounding rocks and forest. The enclosed location gives the waterfall a more secluded feeling, especially when the stream is flowing strongly.

Later, while continuing towards Planina Osredek and Kamniški Vrh, the scenery opened up and offered a completely different type of photography. The change from the narrow forest gorge to the grassy mountain landscape made for a nice contrast and gave me more variety in the photographs from the hike.

Final Thoughts

For me, Korošaški slapovi were a good example of how a relatively short hike can still offer a memorable experience. Following the Korošak stream, crossing the water over rocks, and walking through the natural forest gorge made the route feel more adventurous than I expected.

The main waterfall was the highlight of the visit, but I also enjoyed the possibility of continuing towards Planina Osredek and Kamniški Vrh. This added a completely different mountain landscape to the same outing.

I left with the feeling that Korošaški slapovi are worth exploring for their natural and secluded character. The experience is not only about reaching the waterfall, but also about following the stream and discovering the landscape along the way.
