Bašeljski Vrh Hike
Bašeljski Vrh is a mountain peak rising to 1,744 metres on the ridge between Storžič and Mali Grintovec in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. The hike from Mače is a demanding mountain route with a significant elevation gain, leading through forests, alpine terrain, and steeper rocky sections before reaching the summit.
I started the hike in Mače and followed the marked mountain trail uphill through the forest. As I gained elevation, the surroundings gradually opened up, with increasingly impressive views towards Storžič, Mali Grintovec, the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, and the valleys below.
The combination of a long ascent, changing mountain scenery, and the panoramic views from Bašeljski Vrh made this a rewarding hike for me.
Starting the Hike in Mače
I started the hike in the village of Mače, where I parked near the trailhead. The marked mountain trail was easy to find, and from the beginning it led uphill through the forest.
The first part of the route was mostly shaded by trees, which made the long ascent more comfortable. I followed the marked trail steadily uphill, gaining elevation through the forest as the landscape gradually began to change.
Although the views are limited in the lower section, I knew that the trail would eventually lead into more open mountain terrain. The steady climb from Mače also makes it clear from the beginning that this is a considerably longer and more demanding hike than a short walk to a nearby viewpoint.
Walking Route to Bašeljski Vrh
The trail from Mače climbs steadily through the forest, with the elevation gain becoming noticeable as the hike progresses. I followed the marked route uphill, gradually leaving the lower forest behind and entering more open mountain terrain.
After the forest ascent, I reached Dom na Kališču, where I took a short break and enjoyed the views before continuing towards the summit.
From the hut, the summit was about 30 minutes away. The trail crossed an open ridge among dwarf pine, with some exposed sections requiring extra care before reaching the top.
At 1,744 metres, Bašeljski Vrh opened up wide views across Gorenjska, the Ljubljana Basin, and the Julian Alps in the background. After the demanding ascent, reaching the summit was a particularly rewarding moment for me.
Summit and Views
Standing on the summit of Bašeljski Vrh at 1,744 metres was one of the highlights of my hike. After the long ascent from Mače, reaching the top felt especially rewarding.
The summit offers wide views across Gorenjska and the Ljubljana Basin, with the Julian Alps visible in the background. The open position of the peak makes it a great place to stop, take photographs, and enjoy the surrounding mountains.
I spent some time at the top taking in the views before beginning the descent. After the effort required to reach the summit, the open landscape and panoramic views made the climb well worth it.
My Experience
Bašeljski Vrh really impressed me from the beginning. The steady climb from Mače required quite a bit of effort, but I enjoyed watching the landscape change as I gained altitude.
The short break at Dom na Kališču gave me a chance to rest before tackling the final section towards the summit. The open ridge and exposed parts required more attention, but they also made the final approach more interesting.
When I finally reached Bašeljski Vrh, the wide views across Gorenjska, the Ljubljana Basin, and towards the Julian Alps made all the effort worthwhile. For me, this was one of those hikes where the demanding ascent made the moment at the summit even more satisfying.

Best Time to Visit Bašeljski Vrh
I would choose late spring, summer, or early autumn for this hike, when the mountain trail is generally more suitable for a longer ascent and the higher sections are easier to access.
I enjoyed the open ridge and summit views during my visit, and good weather made it possible to appreciate the landscape without rushing. Clear conditions are especially valuable on Bašeljski Vrh because much of the reward comes from the wide views from the higher terrain.
Winter is a completely different experience. Snow and ice can make the long ascent and the exposed sections before the summit considerably more demanding, so appropriate winter mountain equipment and experience are important.
Trail Conditions
The trail from Mače is well marked, but the long ascent makes it physically demanding. I found the lower forest section straightforward to follow, while the terrain became more open and steeper as I gained elevation.
The section between Dom na Kališču and the summit requires more attention. The route follows an open ridge among dwarf pine, and some parts before Bašeljski Vrh are exposed. I took extra care here, particularly where the trail runs along steeper terrain.
Mountain conditions can change quickly, especially at higher elevations. For this reason, I recommend checking the weather before starting and wearing proper mountain footwear with good grip.
What to Bring
For this hike, I recommend being properly prepared because the route from Mače involves a significant elevation gain and several hours of walking.
Bring:
- Sturdy mountain hiking boots with good grip
- Enough drinking water
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- Snacks or food for the long ascent
- A small hiking backpack
- Trekking poles, which can be useful on the steeper sections
- A phone or camera for photographs
I found that having enough water and suitable footwear was particularly important during the long climb from Mače. If you continue to the summit in changing mountain weather, it is also worth carrying an extra layer of clothing.
Why Visit Bašeljski Vrh?
I would recommend Bašeljski Vrh to hikers who enjoy longer mountain routes and the satisfaction of earning their views through a demanding climb. The ascent from Mače requires effort, but the changing scenery makes the long route interesting from start to finish.
What I particularly liked was the contrast between the forest at the beginning, the stop at Dom na Kališču, and the open ridge leading towards the summit. The final section also adds a more exposed and alpine character to the hike.
For me, the combination of a challenging ascent, peaceful mountain surroundings, and wide views from the summit made Bašeljski Vrh a very rewarding destination.
Photography
Bašeljski Vrh offers plenty of opportunities for mountain photography throughout the hike. The forest section provides a different atmosphere from the more open terrain higher up, while the ridge near the summit offers wider views of the surrounding mountains.
I particularly enjoyed photographing the landscape after reaching the open ridge above Dom na Kališču. The combination of dwarf pine, mountain slopes, and distant peaks created a very different setting from the forest below.
At the summit, the views across Gorenjska, the Ljubljana Basin, and towards the Julian Alps provided the best opportunity for wider panoramic photographs. I spent some time there capturing the landscape before starting the descent.
Final Thoughts
Bašeljski Vrh was a demanding but very rewarding hike for me. The long ascent from Mače required plenty of effort, but the changing landscape made the journey interesting all the way to the summit.
The short break at Dom na Kališču, the open ridge through the dwarf pine, and the more exposed section before the summit each added something different to the experience. Reaching 1,744 metres and seeing the wide landscape of Gorenjska, the Ljubljana Basin, and the Julian Alps made the climb worthwhile.
I would definitely consider Bašeljski Vrh a great choice for hikers who enjoy longer mountain adventures and prefer a quieter route with rewarding alpine scenery.
