Cycling Climb to Soriška Planina in the Slovenian Alps

Cycling up to Soriška Planina is a challenging mountain cycling experience in the Slovenian Alps. This scenic climb takes you through quiet mountain roads, forests, traditional villages, and beautiful alpine landscapes.

The route is known for its steep sections and continuous elevation gain, making it a good choice for cyclists who enjoy demanding climbs and testing their endurance. The peaceful surroundings, fresh mountain air, and changing scenery make the long ascent an enjoyable mountain adventure.

Soriška Planina also has an interesting history. The area was once crossed by the Rapallo border, established in 1920 between the Kingdom of Italy and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Remains of bunkers, military paths, and other defensive structures from this period can still be found around the mountain landscape today.

As you climb higher, the views gradually open up and reveal wider panoramas of the surrounding hills, valleys, and mountain peaks. The combination of cycling, nature, and history gives this route a special character.

Starting the Cycling Route Near Železniki

I started my cycling trip near the village of Železniki, which is a popular starting point for exploring the surrounding mountain roads.

The beginning of the route follows quieter roads through the countryside, where cyclists can enjoy views of forests, villages, and green hills. The first part of the ride is more comfortable, but it is important to save energy because the steeper sections come later.

Good pacing is essential on this climb because the road continues uphill for a long distance. Taking short breaks and maintaining a steady rhythm makes the ascent more enjoyable.

The Climb Towards Soriška Planina

The road towards Soriška Planina gradually becomes more demanding as you gain elevation. The climb follows winding mountain roads through forests and quieter sections of the countryside, with steeper parts appearing as you get higher.

A steady pace is important on this route because the uphill sections continue for a long distance. Saving some energy for the higher part of the climb makes the ride much more manageable, especially where the road becomes steeper.

As the road climbs above the lower countryside, the surroundings begin to change. The forest opens in places and the landscape takes on a more alpine character, giving you a clear sense that you are getting closer to Soriška Planina.

Beautiful Mountain Scenery Along the Route

The scenery changes throughout the climb to Soriška Planina. The lower sections are surrounded by forests, villages, and green hills, while the higher parts gradually open towards alpine meadows and mountain landscapes.

As you get closer to Soriška Planina, the views become wider and you can see more of the surrounding valleys and peaks. The quieter roads also make it easy to stop for a moment, enjoy the landscape, and take a few photographs.

For me, these changes in scenery are an important part of the ride. The landscape feels different as you gain elevation, making the long climb more interesting from beginning to end.

A Challenging Route for Experienced Cyclists

The climb to Soriška Planina is not an easy cycling route. With approximately 857 meters of elevation gain and several steep sections, it requires good fitness, endurance, and preparation.

The route is best suited for cyclists who are comfortable with longer uphill rides and know how to manage their energy during a sustained climb. A steady pace is more important than trying to ride the steeper sections too quickly.

For less experienced cyclists, the climb can be a serious challenge. However, taking your time, planning enough breaks, and staying consistent can make the ascent much more manageable.

My Experience

I started my cycling trip near the village of Železniki and followed the road towards Soriška Planina. Until I reached the turn-off for Soriška Planina, the ride was fairly easy and I could cycle at a comfortable pace.

Once I turned towards Soriška Planina, the ride changed completely. The climb became steep right from the beginning and stayed demanding almost all the way to the top. There were only a few sections where the road became a little easier, so I had to keep a steady pace and save enough energy.

One of the parts I enjoyed most was reaching the village of Sorica. I found it really beautiful, surrounded by green hills and peaceful nature. This is the view of Sorica that I really enjoyed along the way. It was a nice place to stop for a moment, take some photographs, and enjoy the surroundings before continuing the climb.

As I continued higher, the landscape gradually became more open and alpine. The effort of the climb was definitely noticeable, but the views made it easier to keep going.

Reaching Soriška Planina after the long ascent gave me a great feeling of achievement. I was tired, but happy to finally put my bike aside, take a proper break, and enjoy the mountain atmosphere before heading back down.
