Polhograjska Grmada Summit
Polhograjska Grmada is one of the best-known hiking destinations in the Polhov Gradec Hills, offering a peaceful trail and beautiful views from the summit. I enjoyed this hike because it combines a pleasant walk through the forest with a rewarding mountain viewpoint not far from Ljubljana.
The trail leads through quiet woodland before becoming steeper as it approaches the summit. Once I reached the top, I was able to enjoy wide views across the surrounding hills, valleys, and distant mountains.
On clear days, Triglav, Slovenia's highest mountain, can also be seen in the distance. For me, the combination of nature, fresh mountain air, and the open views from the summit makes Polhograjska Grmada a great choice for a few hours outdoors.
Starting the Hike in Setnica
I started my hike from the area near Setnica, where I found a place to park close to the trail. From there, I followed the marked route towards Polhograjska Grmada.
The beginning of the hike took me through quiet forest paths, and I enjoyed the peaceful surroundings right from the start. The trail was easy to follow, and the gradual climb made for a pleasant beginning to the hike.
I liked this part of the route because it quickly took me away from the road and into the forest, where I could enjoy the fresh air and natural surroundings.
Walking Route to Polhograjska Grmada
From Setnica, I followed the marked trail through the forest towards Polhograjska Grmada. The path climbed steadily, but I found most of the route comfortable and easy to follow.
As I continued higher, the forest surroundings remained peaceful and made the walk enjoyable. I liked the fact that the trail was not technically difficult, so I could concentrate on the scenery and enjoy the hike.
Closer to the summit, the trail became steeper and slightly more exposed. I took a little more care in this section, especially because wet conditions can make the ground slippery.
For this part of the hike, I recommend good hiking shoes and taking your time on the steeper sections.
Easy Hike with Beautiful Views
I found this hike to be a pleasant and manageable mountain walk, especially compared with longer and more demanding hikes. The trail gave me enough of a climb to feel like a proper hike, while still leaving plenty of time to enjoy the surrounding nature.
The final ascent required a little more effort because the trail became steeper, but I did not find it overly demanding. I simply took my time and paid more attention to my footing.
For me, the best part was the reward at the end. After walking through the forest, reaching the open summit and seeing the surrounding landscape made the hike feel worthwhile.
Summit and Views
Reaching the summit was the highlight of my hike. After the forest trail and the steeper final section, I enjoyed the open space at the top and the beautiful views in every direction.
From the summit, I could look across the rolling hills, forested valleys, and the surrounding landscape of central Slovenia. On a clear day, Triglav can also be seen in the distance.
I spent some time at the top simply enjoying the scenery and taking photographs. The peaceful atmosphere and wide panoramic views made the effort of reaching the summit worthwhile.
My Experience
I started this hike from the road leading towards Gonte. I reached the starting point by car, but I recommend driving carefully because the road is narrow and there are no protective barriers in some places. A small stream also runs alongside the road, so it is worth paying attention while driving.
After parking, I continued towards the Gonte tourist farm, where I followed the trail towards Polhograjska Grmada. I enjoyed the peaceful walk through the forest and the natural surroundings along the way.
The trail became steeper as I approached the summit, with a few slightly exposed sections. I took my time here, especially because the trail can become slippery in wet conditions.
Once I reached the top, I was rewarded with beautiful panoramic views. I really enjoyed spending some time at the summit, taking photographs and looking across the surrounding hills and mountains.
Overall, I found this to be a very enjoyable hike and one I would recommend to anyone who wants to experience the beauty of the Polhov Gradec Hills without committing to a full-day adventure.

In spring, I would enjoy the fresh green forests and blooming nature, while summer is pleasant because much of the trail passes through the shade of the trees. Autumn is especially attractive because the surrounding hills become covered in colorful foliage.
Winter can also offer a beautiful experience, but snow and ice may make the trail more challenging. If I were visiting in winter, I would take proper winter hiking equipment and be especially careful on the steeper sections near the summit.
Trail Conditions
During my hike, I found the trail well marked and generally easy to follow. Most of the route passed through forest paths with a steady incline, and I had no problems following the marked trail.
The conditions can change quite a bit depending on the weather. After rain, some parts of the trail can become wet and slippery, particularly on the steeper section near the summit.
I recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. In winter, snow and ice can make the final ascent more difficult, so I would allow extra time and take more care on these sections.
What to Bring
For this hike, I would keep things simple. I recommend bringing enough water, comfortable hiking shoes, and clothing suitable for the weather.
I usually take a small backpack with me, which is enough for water, a snack, a camera, and other essentials. Trekking poles can also be useful, especially on the steeper part of the trail near the summit.
Before setting off, I would also check the weather conditions. In colder months, especially when snow or ice is possible, proper winter hiking equipment is important.
