The hiking trail to Stari grad Kamnik begins above the town of Kamnik in Slovenia and leads through beautiful forest and peaceful natural surroundings. This easy first section of the route is a pleasant way to start the hike before the trail becomes more demanding further ahead.
I started my hike in Kamnik, at an elevation of 375 meters, and followed the marked trail towards Stari grad Kamnik. The route begins with an easy walk through beautiful nature, with the forest providing a peaceful atmosphere and a relaxing start to the hike.
The photo above shows the beginning of the trail, where the path is still easy and comfortable to walk. Further along, you reach a junction where you can choose between different route options towards Stari grad Kamnik and Velika špica.
I decided to continue towards Stari grad Kamnik and chose the more difficult route at the junction. This later became a much steeper and more demanding part of the hike, while the beginning shown in the photo was considerably easier.
My Experience
The beginning of the hike was a pleasant and relaxing experience. The trail was easy to follow and led through quiet forest surrounded by beautiful nature.
I enjoyed this part of the route because it allowed me to walk at a comfortable pace and enjoy the peaceful surroundings before reaching the more challenging section.
After some time, I reached a trail junction where there were different possibilities for continuing. I decided to take the more difficult route towards Stari Grad Kamnik. There are also much easier routes available, so you can choose the option that suits you best.
The route I chose became really steep further ahead. The terrain also became more rocky, and there is an interesting small opening in the rock along this section of the trail.
The steep part was more demanding, especially when returning downhill. The descent requires extra care because of the steep terrain and rocky surface, so I recommend taking your time and watching your footing.
The easy beginning of the route was therefore quite different from the later section. I liked this change because it made the short hike more varied and interesting.
I also recommend continuing your hike to Velika špica, another beautiful viewpoint in the area, if you have enough time and want to explore more of the surroundings.
Parking
There is a large gravel parking area at the starting point in Kamnik.
Parking is paid from Monday to Friday, from 7:00 to 15:00. Outside these hours, parking is free.
The parking area provides a convenient starting point for the walk and is located near the beginning of the hiking route.
What to Bring
Although the first part of the hike is easy, comfortable hiking shoes are still recommended, especially if you plan to continue along the steeper route towards the castle.
Bring enough water, especially during warmer weather, and a small backpack for snacks, extra clothing, and personal belongings.
Good footwear with a reliable grip is particularly useful on the steeper and rockier section later in the hike.
A camera is also worth bringing because the route offers beautiful forest scenery, interesting rocky sections, the natural opening in the rock, and the historic castle ruins.
Stari grad Kamnik
