Hom Hiking Trail Guide, Slovenia

Hom is a beautiful hiking destination in Slovenia, rising steeply southwest of the village of Sora. The summit is partly surrounded by forest and offers beautiful views over the surrounding landscape and towards the highest peaks of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps.

I hiked to the summit of Hom from Sora. The trail leads through peaceful forest paths and steadily gains elevation before reaching the summit. The route is relatively short and is a good choice for hikers looking for a rewarding mountain walk without a long day in the mountains.

The photo above was taken at the summit of Hom, where I enjoyed the peaceful mountain atmosphere and the beautiful scenery after completing the climb.

The trail starts in Sora and follows a marked hiking path towards Hom. The route climbs steadily through the forest, with some steeper sections along the way. The total elevation gain is around 355 meters before reaching the summit.

As the trail continues higher, the forest gradually opens in places and the surroundings become more interesting. The final part leads towards the summit of Hom, where the partly forested top provides beautiful views of the surrounding Gorenjska landscape and the Kamnik–Savinja Alps.

Hiking Experience

When I hike to Hom, I like to take trekking poles with me, especially on the steeper sections of the trail. Although the hike is relatively short, the route gains elevation steadily and poles can make both the ascent and descent more comfortable.

I started the hike by walking along a steep road before turning onto the marked hiking trail. The entire route passes through beautiful natural surroundings, with peaceful scenery and plenty of greenery along the way.

I also recommend carrying enough water for the hike. The route can be completed relatively quickly, but having water with you is always useful, especially during warmer weather.

One thing that slightly disappointed me was the limited view from the summit. There is not much of an open panorama at the top, so if you are mainly looking for spectacular mountain views, Hom may not be the best choice. However, if you are looking for a peaceful walk in nature and a place to relax away from busy areas, I still recommend visiting Hom.

For me, proper hiking shoes and trekking poles make the walk more comfortable and allow me to enjoy the peaceful forest, the fresh air, and the natural surroundings along the route.

What to Bring

Although Hom is not a high mountain, proper preparation is still important. Good hiking shoes are recommended because the trail includes some steeper sections.

A small hiking backpack is enough for water, snacks, extra clothing, and basic hiking equipment. Trekking poles can also be useful, particularly during the descent.

Views From Hom

One of the biggest rewards of this hike is the scenery from the summit of Hom.

The partly forested summit offers beautiful views over part of Gorenjska and towards the highest peaks of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. The peaceful surroundings make the summit a great place to stop, relax, and enjoy the mountain landscape.

The combination of forest, fresh mountain air, and scenic views makes reaching Hom a rewarding hiking experience.

Best Time to Hike Hom

The best time to visit Hom is usually from spring to autumn when hiking conditions are more stable.

Spring and summer offer green forests and pleasant hiking conditions, while autumn brings colorful foliage and beautiful scenery.

I recommend choosing a dry day for the hike, especially because some sections of the trail can be more slippery after rain.

Why Visit Hom?

Hom is a great choice for hikers who want a relatively short and easy mountain hike with beautiful scenery.

The combination of a peaceful forest trail, a steady climb, a scenic summit, and views towards the Kamnik–Savinja Alps makes Hom a rewarding destination for a day outdoors.

Photography

The hike to Hom offers several opportunities for photography along the trail. The peaceful forest paths, surrounding hills, green vegetation, and mountain scenery provide interesting views throughout the hike.

The summit is a particularly nice place to take photographs because the partly open landscape provides views over Gorenjska and towards the Kamnik–Savinja Alps.

Final Thoughts

My hike to Hom was a good combination of a short climb, natural surroundings, and a quiet trail. The 355 meters of elevation gain gave the hike enough of a challenge without making it too demanding.

I liked the forest section and the feeling of gradually getting higher towards the summit. The views at the top were somewhat limited, but there were still some nice sights towards the surrounding landscape and Kamnik–Savinja Alps.

Overall, Hom left me with a good impression. It is a simple hike, but one that I would choose again when looking for a shorter walk in the mountains. I found the climb more interesting than the summit itself, especially because of the changing surroundings along the way. Even with the limited views at the top, the hike was still worth doing and gave me a pleasant afternoon in nature.
