Stari grad Kamnik Hiking Trail Slovenia

Stari grad Kamnik is a historic castle ruin located above Kamnik in Slovenia. Situated at 577 meters, it is a great destination for a short hike that combines beautiful nature with an interesting historical site.

I started my hike in Kamnik, at an elevation of 375 meters. A large gravel parking area is available near the starting point, making it easy to begin the walk. The trail initially follows a gentle path through beautiful natural surroundings and peaceful forest.

The first part of the route was easy and enjoyable. I liked walking through the quiet forest and taking in the natural surroundings. After some time, I reached a junction with several route options. From here, you can choose to continue towards Stari grad Kamnik or explore the route towards Velika špica. I decided to continue towards the castle and chose the steeper route.

Hiking Experience

At the junction, I decided to take the more difficult route. The difference was quite noticeable, as the trail soon became very steep and the terrain changed to rocky ground.

This was the most demanding part of my hike. The climb is short, but the steepness makes it feel more challenging than the beginning of the route. There is also a small opening in the rock along this section, which caught my attention and made a nice detail to photograph.

The way down was more difficult for me than the ascent. Because the slope is so steep, it is important to be careful when descending and to pay attention to where you place your feet. I would especially recommend caution on the rocky parts and in wet conditions.

The route does not have to be this demanding. There are easier possibilities at the junction, so hikers can choose a more comfortable option instead of the steeper path.

After reaching Stari grad Kamnik, I explored the remains of the old castle and spent some time enjoying the surroundings. The short climb and the more demanding section made reaching the destination feel rewarding.

Parking

A large gravel parking area is available at the starting point in Kamnik.

Parking is paid Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 15:00. Outside this period, parking is free.

This makes it easy to plan the hike depending on the time and day of your visit.

What to Bring

For the walk to Stari grad Kamnik, comfortable hiking shoes are recommended.

If you choose the steeper route, shoes with good grip are particularly useful because of the rocky and steep terrain. Bring water and some snacks, as well as a small backpack for your personal belongings.

A camera is also a good idea. The forest, rocky section, opening in the rock, and castle ruins all provide interesting subjects.

Stari grad Kamnik

The remains of Stari grad Kamnik are the main destination of the route. The old castle is situated above Kamnik and is surrounded by forest and natural scenery.

The ruins give the hike a historical element that makes it different from a simple walk through the forest. After climbing up from Kamnik, reaching the remains provides a clear destination to explore before returning.

Hiking Tips

If you take the steep route, allow yourself enough time and do not rush, particularly on the descent. The steep rocky terrain requires careful footing.

Good hiking shoes are recommended, and extra caution is advisable after rain when the ground can become slippery.

Those looking for an easier walk can choose one of the less demanding routes at the junction.

Best Time to Visit

The hike can be done during different seasons. Spring and summer are pleasant when the surrounding forest is green, while autumn brings colorful foliage to the route.

After rain, the steep section can be slippery. In winter, snow and ice can make this part considerably more difficult, so appropriate equipment and extra caution are recommended.

Velika špica

Stari grad Kamnik can also be combined with a visit to Velika špica.

I recommend this option if you want to spend more time exploring the area and extend the outing beyond the short walk to the castle.

Photography

There are several opportunities to take photographs along the route.

The peaceful forest provides a natural setting during the easier first part of the walk. Further up, the rocky section creates a different atmosphere, with the small opening in the rock being one of the more interesting details along the trail.

The ruins of Stari grad Kamnik are naturally the main historical subject and offer a nice contrast to the surrounding greenery.

Final Thoughts

The walk to Stari grad Kamnik is relatively short, but choosing the steeper route made my experience more varied and challenging.

I enjoyed the easy beginning through the forest before reaching the junction and taking the more demanding option. The steep rocky section was the most challenging part, while the small opening in the rock added an interesting feature along the way.

On the return, I had to be especially careful going downhill because of how steep the trail is. Anyone choosing this route should take the descent slowly and pay attention to the terrain.

There are easier routes available, so Stari grad Kamnik can also be enjoyed as a more relaxed walk. If you want to continue exploring after visiting the castle, I recommend adding Velika špica to your trip.

Overall, Stari grad Kamnik is a nice short hike from Kamnik that combines forest scenery, a more adventurous section of trail, and an interesting historical destination.
