Stari grad Kamnik Slovenia
Stari grad Kamnik is a historic castle ruin located above the town of Kamnik in Slovenia. Standing at 577 meters, this interesting historical site combines medieval history, peaceful forest trails, and beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
I visited Stari grad Kamnik from Kamnik and enjoyed the short hike through beautiful nature towards the remains of the old castle. I also recommend continuing your hike to Velika špica, another beautiful viewpoint in the area. The route is a great choice for anyone looking for a relatively short and easy hike while also exploring one of the historical landmarks around Kamnik.
The walk starts on an easy trail surrounded by forest and peaceful nature. After some time, you reach a trail junction where you can choose between different routes towards the castle.
I chose the more difficult and steeper route, which made the hike more challenging. There are also much easier routes available, so you can choose the option that suits you best.
The final part of the walk leads towards Stari grad Kamnik, where you can explore the remains of the historic castle and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
My Experience
The hike to Stari grad Kamnik starts with a very easy walk through the forest. The beginning of the trail is relaxing, and there is plenty of nature to enjoy along the way. The peaceful surroundings make it a pleasant start before the trail becomes more demanding.
After a relatively short distance, the trail becomes steeper. I chose the more challenging route, but there is also an easier option if you prefer a more relaxed walk. The steeper section adds some variety to the hike without making the whole route too demanding.
As the trail continues towards the top, the forest remains a nice part of the walk. There are several places where you can stop for a short break and enjoy the surroundings. The change from the easy beginning to the steeper section made the route more interesting.
At the top, the trees limit the view in some places, but there are spots where you can find a nice viewpoint. From there, you can enjoy the scenery around Kamnik and see part of the surrounding mountains. On a clear day, the views are especially enjoyable.
Reaching the castle ruins was the highlight of the hike. After exploring the area and taking photographs of the ruins, mountains, and nature, I also enjoyed a coffee at the mountain hut. Sitting there and looking at the surrounding hills was a relaxing way to finish the visit.
Overall, Stari grad Kamnik was an enjoyable short hike with a very easy beginning, a more challenging section, beautiful forest surroundings, historic ruins, and a pleasant place to stop and enjoy the views. It is a nice choice when you want a shorter outdoor trip without spending the whole day on the trail.

Stari grad Kamnik
Stari grad Kamnik is a historic castle ruin located on Krniška Gora above Kamnik. The castle was first mentioned in written records in 1207, and its elevated position played an important role in the history of the area.
Today, only the remains of the former castle can be seen, but the location is still an interesting destination for a short hike from Kamnik. The hill combines history with forest surroundings and views towards Kamnik and the surrounding mountains.
For me, the ruins make the walk more interesting because the hike has a clear historical destination at the end of the trail.

For a comfortable hike to Stari grad Kamnik, I recommend wearing proper hiking shoes, especially if you choose the steeper route at the trail junction. The easier routes are suitable for a more relaxed walk, while the steeper option requires a little more effort.
Bring enough water and some energy snacks, particularly during warmer weather. A small hiking backpack is enough for this short route.
A camera is also worth taking because there are several opportunities to photograph the forest, the castle ruins, and the surrounding mountain scenery. Before setting off, check the weather conditions, especially if you want to enjoy the views from the top.
If the trail is wet, icy, or covered with snow, take extra care on the steeper sections and choose the easier route if conditions make the more demanding path uncomfortable.
