Trail to Triglav via Kredarica from Krma Valley, Slovenia

The trail from Krma Valley towards Triglav is a long and demanding mountain route through the Julian Alps of Slovenia. Starting at around 930 metres above sea level, the route gradually climbs from the valley into higher alpine terrain and continues towards Kredarica and Triglav.

The lower part of the route passes through forest, where the trail climbs steadily through the peaceful landscape of Krma Valley. As the elevation increases, the surroundings gradually change and the forest becomes less dense.

Higher on the route, the landscape becomes more open and rocky. Steep mountain slopes and impressive alpine scenery surround the trail as it continues towards the higher parts of the Julian Alps.

Hiking Experience

The long ascent from Krma Valley is physically demanding, especially because of the significant elevation gain. The trail requires a steady pace and good physical preparation, particularly during the higher sections.

During the hike, the scenery changes constantly as you gain elevation. The peaceful forest at the beginning is gradually replaced by rocky alpine terrain, steep slopes, and dramatic mountain views.

The route towards Kredarica is already a serious mountain hike, while the section from Kredarica towards Triglav becomes even more demanding. Concentration is important, especially on the steeper and more exposed sections.

Whether you reach the summit in one day or decide to split the hike over two days depends on your physical fitness, experience, pace, breaks, and current mountain conditions.

What to Bring

For this demanding mountain hike, proper equipment and preparation are essential.

👉 Recommended hiking shoes

👉 Hiking helmet

👉 Safety set for fixed cables

👉 Essential hiking hydration

👉 Best daypack for hiking

For the ascent towards Triglav, I recommend carrying at least 3 litres of water per person, especially during the warmer summer months. A helmet and appropriate high-mountain safety equipment are also recommended for the more demanding protected sections.

Mountain Scenery

The route offers changing views throughout the ascent. The forested landscape of Krma Valley slowly gives way to open alpine terrain, where the surrounding peaks become increasingly impressive.

The higher sections provide dramatic views of the Julian Alps, rocky mountain slopes, and the rugged landscape surrounding Triglav.

Hiking Tips

For a safer and more comfortable ascent:

• Wear proper hiking shoes
• Carry at least 3 litres of water
• Bring enough food and snacks
• Maintain a steady pace
• Take regular breaks
• Allow enough time for the complete ascent
• Use appropriate high-mountain safety equipment
• Stay focused on the more demanding sections
• Check the mountain weather forecast before starting

The trail becomes increasingly demanding higher up, so good physical preparation and concentration are important.

Weather Conditions

Weather conditions can change quickly at high elevations. Fog, wind, low temperatures, and reduced visibility can occur even when the weather is sunny in the valley.

During my ascent, Aljažev Stolp was surrounded by thick fog, while sunshine remained visible lower down. The summit area was almost completely white because of the fog, creating a completely different atmosphere from the sunny landscape below.

Always check the mountain weather forecast before starting and take changing conditions seriously. Poor visibility and changing weather can make the higher sections considerably more difficult.

Best Time to Hike

The best time for this route is generally during the summer hiking season, when conditions in the high mountains are usually more suitable.

Snow and ice can remain at higher elevations outside the main summer season. Always check current mountain conditions before starting the hike.

Photography

The route from Krma Valley offers many opportunities for mountain photography. The forest, rocky terrain, steep slopes, and surrounding peaks create changing scenery throughout the ascent.

The higher sections are particularly impressive, with dramatic alpine landscapes and views towards the surrounding mountains.

One of the most memorable moments of the hike was reaching the summit area in thick fog. Aljažev Stolp was almost completely surrounded by white fog, while sunshine could still be seen below, creating a striking contrast between the summit and the valley.

Final Thoughts

The hike from Krma Valley to Triglav via Kredarica was one of the more demanding mountain hikes I have completed. The route is long and requires good preparation, but the scenery along the way makes the effort worthwhile.

The views and changing landscape made the whole hike special, and reaching Triglav was a great feeling after such a demanding ascent. The fog around Aljažev Stolp, while the valley below was still sunny, was something I will especially remember from this hike.
