Triglav via Kredarica from Krma Valley, Slovenia

Krma Valley is one of the most popular starting points for hiking towards Triglav, Slovenia’s highest mountain. Surrounded by the impressive peaks of the Julian Alps, the valley provides a long and scenic approach towards the high mountain terrain and Kredarica.

The hike begins at approximately 930 metres above sea level. From Krma Valley, the trail gradually climbs through forest and alpine terrain, gaining elevation steadily towards the higher parts of the route. The lower section is relatively peaceful, but the long ascent makes this a demanding mountain hike from the beginning.

As the trail continues higher, the landscape becomes more open and rugged. Forest gradually gives way to rocky alpine terrain, with increasingly impressive views of the surrounding Julian Alps. The route continues towards Kredarica, one of the key points on the ascent to Triglav.

From Kredarica, the final section towards the summit becomes more demanding. The terrain is rocky and steep, and the last part requires careful movement and appropriate mountain equipment.

Hiking Experience

The ascent from Krma Valley is a long and demanding climb, but it offers a beautiful way to approach Triglav through the Julian Alps. The changing landscape makes the hike interesting, from the quieter forest at the beginning to the exposed high-mountain terrain closer to the summit.

Near the top, the weather can change quickly. During my ascent, Aljažev Stolp was surrounded by fog, while sunshine could still be seen lower down. The contrast between the foggy summit and the sunny landscape below created a dramatic and memorable mountain scene.

From Kredarica onwards, I recommend extra caution, as the trail becomes very demanding. Concentration is essential while walking, especially on the more exposed and technically difficult sections towards Triglav.

Proper high-mountain equipment is essential for this ascent. I strongly recommend carrying a helmet and appropriate via ferrata safety equipment for the protected sections of the route.

Bring plenty of water for the entire ascent. I recommend carrying at least 3 litres of water per person for the Triglav climb, especially during the warmer summer months.

Always check the mountain weather forecast before starting and take changing weather conditions seriously. Fog, wind, rain, and reduced visibility can make the upper sections significantly more difficult and dangerous.

What to Bring

For this demanding mountain hike, sturdy hiking shoes, sufficient water, snacks, and a suitable hiking backpack are essential.

For the higher sections towards Triglav, appropriate high-mountain equipment should be carried, including a helmet and via ferrata safety set where required by the route and conditions.
