Krekova Koča na Ratitovcu Slovenia

Krekova Koča na Ratitovcu is located at 1,642 metres above sea level and is one of the popular mountain huts in the Ratitovec area. The hut is surrounded by open grassy mountain slopes and offers beautiful views across the surrounding mountains, including Triglav and the Julian Alps.

Ratitovec is a popular hiking destination in Slovenia, with several marked trails leading to Krekova Koča. The hut is a great place to take a break and enjoy the peaceful mountain scenery after reaching the higher parts of the mountain.

Hiking Experience

I started the hike from Prtovč and followed the trail towards Povden. The first half hour through the forest passed quickly and was just right for warming up.

At the saddle, the hike became more demanding. I tackled the steep climb and, as the forest opened up, I reached the steep grassy slopes. Once you reach the grassy slopes, extra caution is needed. I recommend proper mountain hiking footwear for this part of the route.

I could already feel the effort in my legs, but when you walk past those rocky towers and the views begin to open below you, it is easy to forget about the tiredness.

Once I finally got through the steep section and reached the ridge, it was pure enjoyment. The last 10 minutes of easy walking along the scenic ridge to the hut were the perfect finish to the climb.

Views Around Ratitovec

The higher part of the route offers beautiful views across the surrounding mountains. As the trail leaves the forest and reaches the grassy slopes, the landscape opens up and views become much wider.

The rocky towers along the route add character to the scenery, while more mountains come into view as you gain elevation.

Reaching the ridge is one of the most enjoyable parts of the hike. After the steep climb, the final 10 minutes towards Krekova Koča are easy and relaxed. For me, the most beautiful view is towards Triglav and the Julian Alps.

• Carry enough water
• Bring food and snacks

Weather Conditions

Mountain weather can change quickly around Ratitovec. Conditions higher on the mountain can be very different from those in the lower areas.

Fog, wind, rain, low temperatures and reduced visibility can occur at higher elevations. Always check the mountain weather forecast before starting the hike and be prepared for changing conditions.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to hike to Krekova Koča is generally during the warmer months when the trail is free of snow and ice.

Outside the main hiking season, snow and icy conditions can make the steep grassy sections more difficult and require additional caution. Current trail and weather conditions should always be checked before starting the hike.

Photography

This route offers plenty of variety for photography. In lower parts, forest provides different light and atmosphere, while higher up you get open grassy slopes and much wider views.

I especially liked photographing mountain scenery around rocky formations and open slopes. From higher parts, you can capture Triglav, Julian Alps, Karavanke and Škofjeloško hribovje, with valleys stretching below.

Changing weather and light can also make same scenery look completely different, especially when clouds move across surrounding mountains.

Final Thoughts

The hike from Prtovč to Krekova Koča na Ratitovcu was a rewarding climb for me. The first part through the forest was easy and comfortable, but the steep grassy slopes required considerably more effort.

I could really feel the climb in my legs, but the rocky towers and opening views made it easier to forget about the effort. After reaching the ridge, the character of the hike changed completely and the final 10 minutes to the hut were relaxed and enjoyable.

The combination of forest, steep grassy slopes, rocky formations and beautiful mountain scenery makes this route a great way to explore Ratitovec. If you enjoy hiking in Slovenia, Krekova Koča na Ratitovcu is definitely worth visiting.
