Veliki Vrh Košuta Slovenia

Veliki Vrh is one of the beautiful peaks of the Košuta mountain range in Slovenia. Rising to 2,088 metres above sea level, the summit offers impressive mountain views and a rewarding hiking experience. The hike starts at Matizovec and first leads towards Kofce before continuing higher towards Veliki Vrh.

The route passes through grassy mountain terrain and gradually becomes steeper as it approaches the ridge. The final part of the hike follows a scenic grassy ridge and crosses the mountain slope before reaching the turn towards the summit.

Hiking Experience

I started the hike from Matizovec and followed the trail towards Kofce. The first part of the route is relatively easy and is also suitable for children up to Kofce mountain hut.

After Kofce, I continued across the grassy terrain for some time before the trail became steeper. Some sections were a little exposed, so I had to pay more attention while continuing higher.

The ridge towards Veliki Vrh is mostly grassy, but caution is needed when crossing the slope towards the turn for the summit. This part of the route felt quite long to me, as the summit is still at the far end of the slope.

I had to put in quite a bit of effort to reach the summit, but it was definitely worth it. The views from Veliki Vrh are beautiful, and I especially enjoyed the view towards Triglav. For me, it was one of the highlights of the hike, and I definitely recommend visiting Veliki Vrh.

Views Around Veliki Vrh

Veliki Vrh offers beautiful views across the Košuta mountain range and the surrounding Slovenian mountains. The grassy ridge provides an open mountain landscape, with wide views becoming more impressive as you approach the summit.

One of the highlights of the hike is the view towards Triglav. On a clear day, the highest mountain in Slovenia stands out beautifully among the surrounding peaks.

The combination of grassy mountain slopes, the long ridge and the surrounding alpine scenery makes the final part of the route particularly enjoyable.

Hiking Tips

• Pay attention when crossing exposed sections
• Check the weather before starting
• Allow enough time for the complete hike

Although the route is marked and relatively easy, some steeper and more exposed sections require caution, especially on the higher parts of the route.

Weather Conditions

Mountain weather can change quickly around Košuta and Veliki Vrh. Conditions on the ridge can be very different from those in the valleys below.

Fog, wind, rain, low temperatures and reduced visibility can occur at higher elevations. Always check the mountain weather forecast before starting and be prepared for changing conditions.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to hike to Veliki Vrh is generally during the warmer months when the mountain trails are free of snow and ice.

Outside the main summer season, snow can remain on the higher parts of Košuta. Current trail and weather conditions should always be checked before starting the hike.

Photography

Veliki Vrh is an excellent destination for mountain photography. The grassy ridge and open slopes provide beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.

The view towards Triglav is especially impressive and was one of my favourite parts of the hike. On a clear day, the surrounding peaks create excellent opportunities for mountain photography.

Final Thoughts

Veliki Vrh was a rewarding hike for me, even though the final part felt longer and more demanding than I expected. The steep sections and long crossing of the slope required some effort and attention, but reaching the summit made it all worthwhile.

The beautiful views, especially the impressive view towards Triglav, made this hike one I would definitely recommend. If you enjoy Slovenian mountains and want to explore the Košuta mountain range, Veliki Vrh is a great destination.
